Johannes Aavik lived in his parents' home as a schoolboy from 1898 to 1902, and later, from 1919 to 1926, he worked as an Estonian language teacher at Saaremaa United Gymnasium. After his parents' death, his sisters Liisi (1885-1949) and Juuli (1890-1959) became caretakers of the house. From 1961 until his death in 1989, the house was home to Joosep Aavik. On June 19, 1992, the Johannes and Joosep Aavik House Museum was opened here as a branch of the Saaremaa Museum.
