I brought my mini Aussiedoodle to VCA for an exam, hoping to establish care and discuss her health before breeding. Unfortunately, my experience with the veterinarian left me feeling judged rather than supported.
As a first-time breeder, I have invested thousands into ensuring the highest ethical standards. Both dogs are genetically tested and cleared, OFA certified, and have received years of routine care. I came to this clinic before breeding because I want the process to be handled in the most health-conscious way possible. My goal was to find a veterinary partner who could provide prenatal care, puppy wellness visits, and compassionate expertise throughout the process.
When the vet entered the room, she delightfully greeted my dog and began by saying there were two things she wanted to discuss. The first was spaying my dog. I explained that we planned to breed, and her entire demeanor shifted. She paused, said “oh,” and then went silent. It was so awkward that I actually commented on how disappointed she sounded, and she confirmed that she was. Within the first two minutes of our interaction, I already felt judged.
She only asked me one question—whether I had bred dogs before (I haven’t). She did not ask about my preparations, the genetic testing, or the care I’ve already invested. Her body language and tone had changed so drastically that I said "sooo is this not a match? Do you not want to be her vet because we want to breed her?" She shrugged and replied, “I mean, I’ll still be her vet.” At that point, I should have walked out.
I understand that veterinarians encounter irresponsible breeding and overpopulation. However, that judgment should be directed at those who breed unethically—not at a responsible owner who has done the work to ensure healthy, well-planned puppies. It was so bad that the vet never returned to the second topic she said she wanted to discuss. It felt like once she knew I wanted to breed she was done with me.
I'm not an irresponsible pet owner or a bad person and I didn't deserve to be treated like one. Especially as a paying customer. I left the appointment feeling so disheartened that I will never be back.
PS: the women at the front desk and the vet tech were all great! One of them even took pictures of my doggie and I when she saw me taking selfies! It's just the vet and I were clearly not a match.

We were seen last minute by Dr. Childs and she was very nice until we declined her suggested services that we did not need. Her entire demeanor changed and became very rude and dismissive. The tech brought our dog to the back for a physical exam but Dr. Childs never came back to update us on any information. We had to request for her to come back into our room and when she came back, she still seemed irritated from before and vaguely updated us. It felt like we had to pull information out of her and it shouldn’t have been that way. It felt like she didnt want to help us or be there, so she exited in a way that made it seem like we wasted her time. However, the vet tech’s and the front desk were very nice and welcoming. But we would not recommend seeing Dr. Childs.

Im not saying it's a bad/ terrible place, just not the vet for us. My husband and I adopted our dog from a shelter and there was an offer for a free vet check up. We chose the closest one to us here in Escondido. We haven't had our dog two weeks yet ( the appointment had to be within the first two weeks ) but he has done wonderful aside from separation anxiety. They recommend us giving him medication to keep him calm during the visit. So we gave him the medication. He done well at the counter, with pets and people walking by, and the doctor. But there is one nurse who works here that our dog did NOT like. This is the only time we've seen him act this way. Both times she came in the room his whole character changed. They also took him to the back without us, put a slip collar on him and a muzzle. So not only is he completely drugged up, he was also completely restricted. To some I understand it's a precaution, to me if you can't handle pets better maybe you shouldn't be handling them at all, especially taking them to the back to do it all without the owners.
