TLDR: I’m extremely happy I opted to not go with geeksquad for my apple iPhone repairs. The repair agent(or I guess sales rep?) tried to convince me I needed my entire unit replaced when coming in for a camera repair. $110 for the camera but they tried charging me $600 for repairs. Ubreakifix fixed it with absolutely no problems.
I was on time to my appointment to get my iPhone repaired, as the camera had been coming up black. I took it into Geek Squad, as they were in Best Buy and I have never had a bad experience with Best Buy. I had to sit and wait for the next person scheduled to come in, about 15 min after my appointment. I was unbothered by this as I was happy to finally fix my phone, but my time would prove to be a waste here. After finally being helped by an employee named Nathan, I described my issue, and at first it seemed like I was getting some great help. He took my phone in the back, came back out with a white box, and told me there was one more camera left, and that it would be $110 for the repair(that would “HOPEFULLY”) fix my issue. I said great, let’s do it. He proceeded to take my phone and the white box to the back, and returned a few minutes later, to tell me that my phone was considered cracked because it had a few minor(and I mean to the point you really had to look for them) on the front screen, and insisted if I got my phone camera fixed, I would also need to get my display replaced, since my phone is cracked, for a total of like $450. I told him my phone display works fine, and I’d like to replace the camera without replacing the display. He informed me if they took the glass off, because of these “cracks”, chances are, it would crack. I completely understand having to make sure the customer is informed of possible damage, but the way he made it sound, if I gave him my phone, he would break my screen and I would need to replace it. On top of that, he really tried telling me that apple was suggesting I replace the entire phone unit for $600, because the “screen wasn’t sitting flat”…. That one I couldn’t even wrap my head around as it was completely fine. So my original quote of $110 shot up to around $450-$600, when my phone had been working perfectly fine, other than the camera app displaying a black screen. No. I told him I would not do that, and I would take my phone else where. I took my phone to Ubreakifix, and had my phone repaired to a like new state within a few days(they just had to order the camera for me). I felt much, much less taken advantage of, at ubreakifix. The guy clearly thought I was an idiot, and constantly followed his upsells as “I’m not trying to upswell you”. This, along with him talking to his seemingly new coworker like he was an incompetent bother when he was asking for help, made for an extremely wasteful, and unpleasant experience. I will most likely not be returning to Best Buy or Geek Squad again as I’d rather not be treated like an absolute idiot and potentially be out an extra $500.
