After almost 6 years, I've found a "parrot" vet,,,Dr. Oster...who REALLY knows and connects with birds. He is indeed a "bird whisperer"!! A veterinarian group in Prattville, AL misdiagnosed my parrot as having scabies and being poisoned. Dr. Oster diagnosed my beloved companion as being "hormonal". He spent almost 2 hours with her and had her calm and responding to his commands. Unbelievable! He was even able to trimmed her nails and beak without traumatizing. So relieved and extremely proud to HIGHLY recommend this wonderful, responsive doctor who will not make you feel like a bad pet-parent.

Do not bring your animals here this was the worst service I have ever received!
My dog was in horrible situation where I was out of town and when someone felt her to check on her, she was giving birth and a puppy was stuck. She was rushed to this animal hospital as it is supposed to be for emergencies now mind you me, and several people called ahead of time to confirm the pricing of this situation and I was told that I only had to pay a certain price for her to be seen to immediately bring her That she was in and they will be able to help her a long story short she was brought in by one of my friends because I was not in town and they proceed to do the exam they end up giving me a price that was way out of my Told them ahead of time it would be they end up, offering to kill my animal and would not remove the deceased puppy from her birth canal that was halfway hanging out and still made me pay over $400 for her to be able to leave alive with a puppy half out of her that was deceased! They obviously do not care about anybody’s animal and all they care about is your money and this is not how you do emergency services!

If you’re looking for a vet who actually gets exotic birds, I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Oster at VCA Animal Hospital. I brought my cockatoo in for a pretty stressful cloaca issue, and from the moment we walked in, I felt like we were in the right hands.
Dr. Oster was incredibly thorough—took the time to explain what was going on in a way that didn’t feel rushed or overly clinical, but still made it clear they knew exactly what they were doing. They handled my bird with real care and confidence, which matters a lot when you’ve got a sensitive, intelligent animal like a cockatoo who doesn’t tolerate just anyone.
What really stood out was how proactive the treatment plan was. It wasn’t just a quick fix—they looked at underlying causes, gave clear instructions for care at home, and made sure I felt comfortable every step of the way. And most importantly: it worked. My cockatoo is doing so much better now, and the improvement was noticeable faster than I expected.
The whole staff was kind, attentive, and clearly experienced with exotics—not something every clinic can claim. You can tell they genuinely care, not just about the animals, but about the owners too.
Honestly, I walked in worried and left relieved. That’s about the best outcome you can ask for. If you’ve got a bird and need a vet you can trust, Dr. Oster and the team here are the real deal.

***Exotic Animals Post***
I’d like to share my experience with Carriage Hills Veterinary Clinic and, in particular, the outstanding care provided by Dr. Oster. My ferret, Tua, developed a painful issue with his left eye — a thick, mucus-like discharge that made it difficult for him to tolerate even gentle cleaning. After visiting my regular vet and starting medicated eye drops four times a day, his condition worsened. By the next morning, Tua couldn’t open his eye at all, and my vet referred us to Carriage Hills’ exotics specialist while also scheduling him for potential eye‑removal surgery.
From the moment we met Dr. Oster, it was clear we were in the hands of someone with true exotic‑animal expertise. Within minutes — and without causing Tua any distress — he was able to gently open the eye and immediately understood what was needed. He treated Tua’s pain first, prescribing a pain‑relief eye drop that allowed me to administer the medicated drops without hurting him. He also added two additional solutions to address inflammation and promote healing.
The improvement was almost immediate. Tua began recovering overnight.
What impressed me just as much as his skill was Dr. Oster’s compassion. He personally texted to check on Tua, made sure I knew how to reach him in an emergency, and provided reassurance every step of the way. At our follow‑up appointment a week later, Tua received a clean bill of health — and he got to keep his eye.
Finding a knowledgeable and genuinely caring exotics veterinarian is incredibly difficult, and I am beyond grateful to have found one in Dr. Oster. I now have complete confidence that both of my ferrets will receive exceptional care at Carriage Hills.

My cat had been fighting a long battle against Lymphoma and after suffering what the vet believed to be a heart attack, it was time to put our cat down.
She was very skinny after her battle with cancer which made me worried that the vet might have a hard time finding her veins for the injection. The vet moved extremely quickly due to my cat's extremely poor health.
Unfortunately, after administrating the injection, another pet at carriage hills needed immediate assistance. The vet said it would take potentially 3-5 minutes for my pet to pass and then immediately left because one of the techs kept coming in and saying the vet was needed now because of another animal.
Unfortunately, the injection did not work and my cat spent the next 15-20 minutes gasping for air while she laid in my arms. She wasn't dying but she was suffering even more.
We tried to find a vet tech but they were all gone from the common areas and we couldn't find anyone to help. Finally, after waiting with my suffering cat, a tech came out and we were able to let her know what was happening and get my cat to the vet to finish putting her down.
I understand that another animal was in urgent need, but in my opinion, I believe my cat deserved more care and attention to ensure that her passing was peaceful. I am extremely upset. Despite the error and mishandling of the situation, which I believe is egregious, they didn't really do anything to help other than send the tech in to apologize.
