Don’t misunderstand, we have had great experience with the vets at VCA. They have been common sense and compassionate.
One of our dogs has ben on Librela for around a year. We have been getting the med from VCA and giving the shots at home. VCA changed the policy to make us come in for a visit to get the monthly shot. Kudos to VCA in that, as far as I can tell, they did not charge for the visit, only the med. A vet tech came out and gave our dog the shot. Quick visit.
However, our dog freaked out. He does not like going to the vet. When we give the shot at home he calmly sits there. No worries. We then asked for a prescription to keep our dog from having to suffer through that every month. Nope, the “policy” is that they will not give us a prescription.
The understanding I have is there is a very thin excuse that there is some liability even if we get it elsewhere such as if the dose is given wrong etc. As far as I can tell it is thin at best. The biggest reason is they want the $1200 a year they get for the med.
VCA is a corporation and the policies were handed down. First one, OK fine. Some idiot wants to sue because they poked themselves and claimed they were not trained. Perhaps. It would be almost impossible to convince me the second policy is anything but a financial decision and that is what worries me. In the past our vets were common sense and gave us all the information to make decisions. In at least one case they could have easily got us to do a procedure that would have been expensive (depending on your definition of expensive). The vet convinced us the risk was not worth the reward. He had me as a loyal customer there. I would have listened to him on almost any decisions. Now I just don’t trust that corporate VCA is going to be pressuring the vets to upsell everything in order to make greater profit.
Both my wife and I have been administering shots to pets (my wife is a physician) for over 40 years but big corporate entities simply have no ability to allow such decisions to be made locally.
My recommendation is find a local vet that can respond to individuals. VCA cannot.
Update: VCA responded publicly asking me to contact their support team, but did not address the concern here or reach out directly. The issue remains unchanged: there is no flexibility in the policy requiring in-clinic administration of Librela, even when it creates significant stress for the animal and there is clear capability to administer it safely at home.
This reinforces my concern that centralized policy is overriding the kind of case-by-case judgment we previously experienced from the veterinarians.

We have been customers for years with four different dogs over the last decade. In a family emergency we called to get a same day appointment and the staff wouldn’t even try to help us. This is not the kind of customer service you’d expect from the place you have been bringing your pets to for years. Would not recommend based on the lack of empathy.

Was told our dog needed a tooth extracted. Needed to have his teeth cleaned before they could extract it. The day comes for the tooth to be extracted, we drop our dog off in the morning and are told they’ll call us before they take the tooth. We don’t hear from them all day. My wife calls in the evening and is told the cleaning went well and he didn’t need an extraction…. The entire reason we had the teeth cleaning was because they told us it needed done for the extraction that needed to happen. They scammed us out of thousand dollars. Do not recommend this place they will scam you.
