A marathon was going on in Milwaukee so the google directions were stopped by the cop closing off the street. We ended up heading North on ferry interstate exit road to Bay street and under the interstate to the port. Waited in line for personal to check vehicles. Then exited vehicle to board the ship. When boarding I suggest getting in the middle row not by the windows if you get sea sick! You can walk outside if you want to see or go up on the sundeck. Don’t eat beforehand if the waves are rough. Eat when you get across. We saw numerous people using barf bags. Two ships were crossing our path so we slowed down to let them cross. It surprised me when the ship became more violent with the rocking of the waves. There is a map at the back of the ship cabin that shows where the ship is in the crossing process. It takes about 2 hours to cross the water. Be ready for this amount of time. We had a snack from our backpack as we got very close to Michigan, but I would not recommend any eating before hand. Check out the wonderland distillery in muskegon for a cool drink experience.

I love the ferry. The employees are very kind, helpful and efficient. The boat is clean with plenty of seating. It is always on time and leaves on time which I appreciate. Plus it is beautiful to look out upon the lake and the coastline.

Basically, if your weather is good you are probably going to enjoy this ferry crossing. If the weather is rough it can apparently be stomach churning. The ferry probably won't save you time over just driving but in terms of an enjoyable experience I think it delivered handily. One unfortunate reality is that the more passengers you have the worse the value gets since the cost to DRIVE around lake Michigan with a full load of people in the car is almost exactly the same as a car with 1 person in it but the Ferry goes from expensive (about 404 dollars for 2 people and 1 car in regular seating or 447 in premiere) to very expensive (650-750) for 4 people.
Cost aside, I was impressed with every aspect of our trip. The directions related to loading the vehicles onto the ferry, both recorded and face-to-face were crystal clear. The premiere cabin delivered a quiet child free place to enjoy the crossing, included Wi-Fi, waiter service and, at least for our trip, priority car loading and unloading which was wonderful. The food, while basic, was honestly better than I expected. Even the bathrooms on-board were super clean which based on almost every other ferry I've ever been on is super rare.
Photo shows the very precise parking used to fit as many cars as possible. Our parking attendant was excellent and even though we were one of the 2 cars facing perpendicular across the vehicle deck instead of nose to tail like most of the cars, it was not stressful with the precise directions and hand signals they gave me.

One of the coolest experiences I have ever had. Crossed Lake Michigan for the first time ever, departing Milwaukee and traveling to Muskegon. Bought premier and it was worth it. Crystal took really good care of us and the food was surprisingly good. The burger tasted great with fresh red onions. I stood on the top deck and felt the true power of the 4 MCS engines thrusting us through the water. Amazing day on the lake. Was told it was rare for it to be that calm. Can't wait to do it again.
