I hired Hermit's to temporarily move my upright piano ~40ft, no stairs. They responded to my inquiry within minutes and came out the next day. They were on time, gave good notice, and were friendly and polite. They wrapped the piano and moved it on a small wheeled platform. While loading/moving the piano, they seemed unsure and at one point there was a loud bang going over the front door threshold, but they gave no indication something was wrong. On their way out, they were looking at the floor and apologized for getting it dirty. I paid the balance, gave them a small tip, per their request, and they left.
After mopping the floor later that day, however, I saw 2 very deep ~7ft+ grooves from the wheels of the platform. Luckily, we were already replacing our floor (which I don't think they knew at the time they moved the piano). I notified them about the damage with pictures and said they would need to use a different method for moving the piano back, with which they agreed. However, when my husband got home, he not only noticed the grooves but a large scratch in the floor and a big dent in the threshold plate of our front door. We both agreed then that we needed a different company to move the piano back, lest we risk further damage. I called Hermit’s and explained the additional damage and need to cancel. They apologized and canceled the return appointment.
Ultimately, I'm very disappointed. I’m concerned they realized they weren’t properly moving the piano and continued to do so. I’m concerned they knew they damaged the floor before they left but opted not to say anything. Finally, I’m bothered by the general lack of concern or desire to rectify the situation in any way. Had we not been replacing the floor already, the damage would have cost at least several hundred dollars to repair. Due to the fee structure from Hermit’s, it would have cost us ~$100 less overall to hire speciality piano movers from the start. Plus, we now also have the cost and work of replacing the threshold plate. I haven't used the piano since they moved it, but hopefully it has not suffered any damage.
