At Hatchell Law, PLLC I provide my clients with upfront and honest representation in cases directly impacting their lives. As an attorney, I understand how overwhelming the legal system can seem. That’s why I make a point to clearly communicate with you during every step of the process. Contact me if you’ve recently received a traffic ticket, been charged with a DUI, or have been accused of another crime in Virginia. I proudly defend clients throughout Mecklenburg County, including residents of Chase City and South Hill.
Today, I called to inquire about services and costs for my mother-in-law, who resides in Chase City. During the conversation, I was told that “nobody needs a trust in Chase City,” which I found offensive. As an African American with a doctoral degree and a comprehensive estate plan that includes a will, trust, and living will at the age of 41, this assumption was particularly disheartening. It is important to note that not all Black individuals are uneducated or lack financial resources.
I was seeking to establish a revocable trust, a will, and a power of attorney. However, I was informed that revocable trusts are not offered at this location. This is crucial because such a trust helps protect assets from probate. Essentially, if you have significant assets and wealth and you are of African descent, it seems you are only offered basic services such as a living will and a power of attorney.
This experience was frustrating and indicative of a deeper issue of stereotyping and unequal service offerings based on assumptions about race and socioeconomic status. It is imperative that all individuals, regardless of background, have access to the full range of estate planning services to protect their assets and provide for their families.
After leaving my review, the firm contacted me. The representative expressed sincere regret for the situation that occurred the previous day and offered an apology. While first impressions are important as a business owner, I believe in giving second chances. During our follow-up conversation, I appreciated the proactive approach in suggesting who could be used for the services that I needed. The office has since clarified that they do not offer trust services, and this misleading information has been removed from their website. I am pleased that my feedback contributed to this clarification for the practice. Additionally, the firm offers a range of other services that may be beneficial based on individual needs.

This undoubtedly is the rudest lawyer I have ever encountered to have ever met. He was all about serving the court and not representing the client appointed to.
