Estate Planning

At The Bruton Law Firm, we understand some of the most difficult times require complexities. We are capable of handling the following: Last Wills and Testaments -A will, also called a "last will and testament," is a document that can help you protect your family and your property. There are several ways you can use a will. You can: -leave your property to people or organizations -name a personal guardian to care for your minor children -name a trusted person to manage property you leave to minor children, and -name a personal representative, the person who makes sure that the terms of your will are carried out. What happens if I die with out a will? - In South Carolina, if you die without a will, your property will be distributed according to state "intestacy" laws. South Carolina's intestacy law gives your property to your closest relatives, beginning with your spouse and children. If you have neither a spouse nor children, your grandchildren or your parents will get your property. This list continues with increasingly distant relatives, including siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, and your spouse's relatives. If the court exhausts this list to find that you have no living relatives by blood or marriage, the state will take your property. Why is a Will important? -A will is especially important if you are a single parent or married and have children from a previous relationship. A Will allows you to designate a specific guardian for your children. A Will also allows you to distribute your property such as bank accounts, stocks, bonds and real estate property to specific family members or friends. -As you plan for your future, it is very important that you don’t forget to plan for the unexpected! Schedule a consultation now and allow me to assist you with securing your family’s future! Healthcare Power of Attorney -This is a signed, dated and witnessed legal document in which you can name another person to make medical decisions for you if you become unable to make them. This form of advance directive can apply to any medical condition – not just terminal illness. In this document you can describe treatment you want and do not want. Durable (Financial) Power of Attorney (POA) -A POA allows you to appoint another person to act as an Agent for you. A POA enables the Agent to handle your assets and property including selling and acquiring assets, accessing bank accounts, and paying bills. It will be up to the you to determine what decisions an Agent can take on your behalf and what actions the Agent may engage in. Because of the extent of these powers, you will want to be sure that the person you designate to be your agent has your best interests in mind at all time when acting under the POA.

I would give Mrs. Bruton and her firm above a five if I could! From the very beginning, they were incredibly kind, compassionate, and attentive to every detail of our situation. Navigating legal and family matters can be overwhelming, but they made the entire process feel manageable and supported every step of the way. Mrs. Bruton truly took the time to listen, understand our needs, and provide thoughtful guidance. Her professionalism, combined with genuine care, made a difficult time so much easier for our family. The entire firm was responsive, knowledgeable, and always made us feel like a priority. If you’re looking for a legal team that not only delivers excellent results but also treats you with respect and empathy, Mrs. Bruton and her firm are the ones to trust. We are incredibly grateful for everything they’ve done for us.

I booked my first lawyer consultation with this firm and unfortunately the experience was very disappointing, especially considering the cost for a 30-minute consultation. The meeting was conducted over the phone, and while the attorney called a few minutes late (which is understandable), the overall interaction felt very unprofessional. During the call, the attorney’s demeanor made it seem like my concerns were not important. I was placed on hold multiple times, and several people came in and out of the office during our conversation. At times, the attorney even spoke with others in the office without putting the phone on mute or placing me on hold, which made it difficult to feel that my consultation was being taken seriously. At the end of the call, I was told that paperwork would be sent if I wanted to move forward with their services. However, I never received any follow-up or documentation. For the amount charged for such a short consultation, the level of professionalism and attention was very disappointing. Many people cannot afford to spend hundreds of dollars for legal advice, and clients deserve to feel heard and respected during that time. I hope the firm improves its communication and client experience moving forward.
