  My husband spent months rebuilding his life and worked hard in rehab to save $4,000, every dollar of which went toward hiring Mark to help him fight for his future and remain an active father in his daughter’s life. In the end, nothing meaningful was done for us legally, and everything that truly mattered had already been accomplished by my husband himself. This was a two-year-old case involving a first-time, nonviolent offense involving less than five grams. Since then, he completed nine months of rehab, became active in church, got married, maintained steady employment, paid child support, and became a consistent, loving presence in his daughter’s daily life. He was no longer “on the streets” — he was thriving, contributing to society, and building a future. Yet despite all of that progress, he was sentenced to 2.5 years in a county work program. Ironically, he could have served around 10 months in prison and be home sooner. Instead, a man who had already turned his life around was taken away from his family for years. What makes this even harder to accept is that the same 2.5-year work program plea was offered before we ever saw our attorney that day. We spoke to him about that not being reasonable for us. There was no meaningful pushback, no negotiation, no attempt to advocate for alternatives such as probation, ankle monitoring, drug testing, or any structured supervision that would have allowed him to continue supporting his family and raising his daughter. But an attorney’s job is to advocate for their client — especially when that client has demonstrated genuine rehabilitation and poses no danger to society. My husband was willing to comply with any conditions necessary to remain home legally and continue being the father his daughter needs. Instead, his daughter will now miss years with her father during some of the most important moments of her young life. Child support has fallen behind, our family has suffered financially and emotionally, and a man who had already proven he could change was removed from the life he worked so hard to rebuild. It is deeply frustrating to watch the justice system punish someone after they have already done everything right. From our perspective, this outcome felt less focused on rehabilitation and more focused on benefiting the county through labor in the work program system. My experience with this law firm was devastatingly disappointing. I trusted them to fight for my husband and our family, and instead, we were left feeling unheard, unrepresented, down 4 grand and completely defeated.
