I would not recommend Hankey Marks & Crider. I did not even get through the intake phone call. I tried explaining my self employment income situation to the person doing my intake for an SSDI application and her lack of ability to comprehend what I was trying to explain made me feel like I should just seek professional help elsewhere. The questions I should, “call the SSA and ask,” were able to be answered with a quick Google search after our phone call. I expected more know how and experience from a law firm that is supposed to specialize in this area. Gig work and self employment are not new concepts. Edit: I was asked by Whitney if I had all of my credits, which I had researched prior and most definitely did. According to SSA.gov, I had the 40 credits required for regular SS benefits at retirement age and have also worked every year the last 10 years, so no issue there. I also had an estimated SSDI benefit of close to $2900 per month. What Whitney did not understand was how I could gross approximately $6000 in earnings from June 1st to present (August) and have only made a profit of approximately $300 due to business and vehicle expenses. Any reasonable person would not say that $100/month of profit for this period is gainful activity, but she and apparently the attorney she requested further information from both said I exceeded the SSA guidelines. While in my own research, I fail all three tests outlined in: "§ 404.1575 Evaluation guides if you are self-employed." This probably would not seem to matter to Hankey Marks & Crider if I demonstrated this along with my negligible profits. The owner (on Google at least) did not even do their own due diligence to investigate the matter of this review to see the nature of the questions I was told to ask the SSA and assumed it was just based on work history eligibility as a gig worker. I advise you to be careful before choosing Hankey Marks & Crider based on my own experience.
