I met with Sharon for a consultation on a Child Support case. I had been preparing for a few weeks and had documents ready to turn over for a professional to take it and run with in court. Sharon met with me for an hour though I scheduled for 30 minutes. Reviewed my docs and provided invaluable guidance…then sent me on my way to represent myself. While it was the last vote of confidence I needed, it was also a display of nobility: at times like this we are willing to do and pay anything for our children but Sharon didn’t even think about a check and I’m sure her hour of time is worth a lot. I had what I needed and the priceless tweaks and advice Sharon gave helped me get everything I wanted and then some AS the defendant! This is the only review I’ve ever done AND I’ve included my name because I want all to know of the authenticity of this attorney; World-class! If you are in need of representation, I definitely recommend her…can only imagine what she can do in court herself if her guidance accomplishes so much.

Frequently Asked Questions About Oberst DeFala Law

How long does the Connecticut divorce process take?

Connecticut family rules were updated in 2020 and 2021 to meet the current needs of family law participants. Previously, divorces required at least four months-one month for service of process plus a 90-day waiting period-but this timeline can now be waived easily through a series of court forms. The mandatory courthouse appearance used to cause additional delays of several weeks just to secure a hearing date, followed by hours spent waiting at the courthouse for your turn before the judge. Today, parties can sign an agreement with all necessary forms in a single day, e-file with the court, and receive online approval from the judge in as little as five days. Some courthouses may take longer to approve a divorce agreement based on the judge's current docket volume. Even with these significant improvements to Connecticut's divorce process in recent years, having the best divorce attorney represent you remains essential if you want to move through the court process as efficiently as possible. Contact us today to begin taking your first steps.

How is property divided in a divorce?

Connecticut divorce law divides property through three fundamental methods: alimony or spousal support, which distributes the parties' earnings following divorce; child support, which continues until the youngest child reaches age 18 and completes high school; and asset or debt distribution, which aims to leave each spouse in an equitably sustainable position. Alimony can be waived or preserved, and child support remains modifiable until the child ages out. Asset distribution becomes final upon completion and cannot be modified once the divorce concludes. The asset and debt distribution starts by identifying all marital assets and debts. Generally, assets and debts involved were acquired throughout the marriage. It's crucial to understand that even if one party earned a larger portion of an accumulated asset or incurred debt without spousal approval, this doesn't disqualify them from being treated as marital assets and debts. If you're concerned about property division in your upcoming divorce, our local divorce lawyers can help you conclude your divorce in the strongest possible financial position.
