Matt grew up in Tucson, Arizona spending his summers in northern New Mexico. He graduated from Amphitheater High school and joined the U.S. Army at the age of 17. While serving in the Infantry, he traveled the world spending two years stationed in Germany with the 8th Infantry Division. As a Mortar section Sergeant in the 82nd Airborne Division, he served in the first Gulf War. Matt was one of the youngest Jumpmasters in the history of the 82nd, qualifying as a Jumpmaster before being old enough to buy a beer at the NCO club. His military awards include the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, two Army Commendation Medals and the Parachutist Badge.
After the Army, Matt began attending Pima Community College in Tucson on the G.I. Bill, ultimately graduating from the University of Arizona. A lifelong Wildcat, he still travels to Tucson to attend U of A football games regularly. Matt was working at the Pima County Juvenile Detention facility when he was accepted to the University of New Mexico School of Law. In law school, he was selected to participate on the UNMSOL Mock Trial Team both his second and third years. With Matt’s help, the 2002 Mock Trial team won the regional championship and participated in the national competition, the first time in over 15 that UNMSOL was represented at that level.
Matt’s first job out of Law School was as a prosecutor for theThird Judicial District Attorney’s Office in southern New Mexico, where he learned the process of the government’s strategy when prosecuting defendants. With this experience, he went into private practice in 2004 in Las Cruces and has been working for his clients as a criminal defense attorney ever since. Matt has had more than 50 criminal jury trials in courts from Deming to Alamogordo and from Las Cruces to Truth or Consequences.
