This firm had me sign a PRO BONO working agreement, but then took HALF of my settlement money! My attorney, Kevin Owen, “strongly advised” I accept a settlement offer that does not fix my financial problems that resulted from the reason I had to engage in legal action. The working agreement states if GEL’s client does not cooperate with the legal advice of GEL, they can fire you as a client and you will be liable for compensating them for hours billed. I told Kevin the settlement offer was not enough as he was insisting he would take half and his response was essentially that I need to be grateful as he’s “offering me a very large discount for his services”. I felt that if I did not accept the offer, I would be fired as a client and legally liable to pay him and his paralegal the exorbitant fees of hundreds of thousands of dollars he claims their work is worth.
The agreement is titled as a PRO BONO agreement and the invoices clearly state “PRO BONO”. Instructing me to accept a settlement offer that does not fix my situation (since he insisted on taking half of my settlement) is not working for the best interest of his client!
This firm misrepresents working agreements as PRO BONO and relies on clients being too afraid of being ripped off by yet another lawyer to sue them for malpractice.
