I engaged this firm to draft a purchase agreement for a business acquisition. I met with Jay Dell in October for a detailed consultation, was told the agreement would take approximately 2-3 weeks, and paid my retainer at that time. That timeline was reasonable.
Four weeks later, I received a call from Jay Dell asking whether I still wanted to proceed. He acknowledged that he had completely forgotten about the engagement. I confirmed that I did and asked them to move forward. Nearly two months after the original meeting, I received a rough draft. Fortunately, my deal was not time-sensitive.
Communication stalled again after that. In January, I was contacted by a newly hired attorney who was clearly unfamiliar with my matter. He asked many of the same questions Jay had already covered and documented during our initial consultation, and I was billed for that time. To add to the frustration, portions of the final agreement contradicted Jay’s earlier legal guidance, making it difficult to know which advice to rely on.
Ultimately, I received a completed agreement nearly three months after the initial consultation, along with additional billing that reflected work I believe should have been handled correctly the first time. Being charged for what felt like duplicated effort did not sit well.
The only reason this is not a one-star review is because I previously used this firm for a real estate closing, and that experience was sufficient and without issue. However, based on this experience, I would not use them again for business-related legal work. In my opinion, their core competency appears to be real estate closings and workers’ compensation matters.
Overall, the process was frustrating, disorganized, and unnecessarily prolonged. While I paid the invoices without dispute, I would caution others to carefully evaluate the scope of their needs before engaging this firm for work outside of its primary areas of practice.
