  UPDATE — August 2026 I have now received a response from Direct Auto regarding my concerns about my daughter being added to our policy and charged as a driver without our authorization. Rather than addressing my concerns about how she was added to the policy in the first place as a LICENSED DRIVER, Direct Auto informed me that because my daughter has a learner’s permit and lives in our household, she must be added to the policy as a rated driver. In fact, she should’ve been added at the age of 14! They then stated: “Please contact us at your earliest convenience to add her to the policy to avoid cancellation of your policy.” So, to be clear, we are now being told that if we do not add our daughter to the policy—and accept the additional cost—our entire insurance policy could be canceled. I expected Direct Auto to address the concern, but instead the response shifted to requiring us to add her or risk cancellation. Please use caution when looking into this insurance company. Even if you think you have no other options. That where they think they have you. I am extremely frustrated with my experience with Direct Auto. My teenage daughter recently received her Tennessee learner’s permit, and I contacted Direct Auto because I wanted to make sure she was properly covered while learning to drive. The issue is that Direct Auto is attempting to rate her as a licensed driver, even though she does NOT have a driver’s license—she has a learner’s permit. I have been trying to get a clear explanation of why she is being rated this way and what specific policy or underwriting rule requires a permit holder to be rated as a fully licensed driver. I got 3 different answers/actions from 3 different people in the phone. I have now emailed three different Direct Auto email addresses trying to get an answer, and no one has gotten back to me. I am not asking for anything unreasonable. I simply want an explanation of how my daughter’s learner’s permit is being classified and why I am being charged/rated as though she is a licensed driver. I have been a customer and expect basic communication when there is a question affecting my insurance coverage and premium. If Direct Auto has a company policy that requires Tennessee permit drivers to be rated as licensed drivers, then someone should be able to clearly explain that to me. At this point, the lack of communication is just as frustrating as the issue itself. I hope someone from Direct Auto will actually take the time to contact me and explain this.
