- WCWesley CrabbSep 25, 20261.0State Farm managed to turn a straightforward insurance situation into one of the most frustrating experiences I’ve had with an insurance company. I’m currently deployed overseas, and there was confusion over the fact that I’m maintaining a separate mailing address while my insured address remained my residential address in the United States. State Farm ultimately sent me a nonrenewal notice stating that I “no longer reside” at the insured residence, even though I had not permanently moved and was only temporarily away because of my deployment. Because of how the situation was handled, I decided to take all of my business elsewhere and cancelled my renters policy along with both of my auto policies. Despite the nonrenewal and my cancellation requests, State Farm somehow renewed the renters policy anyway and billed me for the new term. To be clear, they did not actually charge my account, but I was still issued a bill for a policy I had already cancelled. So they told me they would not renew my renters policy, lost all three of my policies because of that decision, then renewed my renters policy anyway and sent me a bill. I had to call again to get the renewed policy cancelled and the charges waived. The representative who handled that call was helpful, but the overall experience was inconsistent, confusing and completely avoidable. Being deployed already makes managing responsibilities back home more complicated. I should not have had to spend my time overseas sorting out confusion over mailing versus residential addresses, a nonrenewal, multiple cancellations and then an unexpected renewal bill. I moved all of my coverage elsewhere and have no intention of returning to State Farm.
