When I visited my local State Farm office to purchase a policy, I was told that an agent I had never met or spoken to — Jake Larson, located in a completely different city — had somehow claimed me as his customer. Because of this, my local agent was not allowed to help me until I contacted Jake Larson’s office and explained why I preferred to work with someone in my own town. I ended up having to call Jake Larson’s agency, justify my choice, and wait for them to grant permission for my local agent to sell me a policy. This unnecessary runaround cost me my time and left me with the impression that State Farm treats customers like territory to be traded rather than people seeking service. This odd and frustrating process turned out to be a sign of things to come, and I ultimately chose not to stay with State Farm. I strongly recommend paying attention to how their internal agent-claiming system might affect your experience.
