I would not recommend this Extra Space Storage location.
The monthly cost continued to increase over time, making it far more expensive than the value provided. For the price customers pay, I expected a clean, well-maintained facility, but that was not my experience.
The storage areas were frequently dirty, with common spaces often looking neglected. To make matters worse, the facility only had one customer bathroom, and it seemed to be out of order consistently.
What disappointed me most was the lack of response to customer concerns. I raised multiple complaints with both local management and the corporate office, yet the issues were never properly addressed. Despite repeated promises and reports, conditions remained the same.
When you're paying premium storage rates, you expect basic cleanliness, functional amenities, and responsive customer service. Unfortunately, this location failed to deliver on all three. I eventually moved my belongings elsewhere and would encourage others to carefully consider their options before renting here.

I truly can’t believe this place has such a high rating, it does not accurately reflect the experience we have had. The units are NOT actually the size as advertised, when this was brought up to Extra Space they basically said sizing is “approximate” and offered no alternative options or solutions. It’s not difficult to provide customers with accurate measurements so they actually get what they believe they are paying for. The price also increased to over DOUBLE what we initially were paying in two years. It’s crazy to continue raising rent prices when the unit you are paying for is only 2/3 of the size it is advertised as. I would very much NOT recommend renting here. Don’t let their promo prices fool you, they will jack up in the price in no time!

CLEANLINESS:
Although this facility is indoors, all of our stuff was covered in bugs and spiders. There were also bits of the insulation or particles of the ceiling that fell onto things.
PRICE:
We initially rented a “5x10” unit at $67/month including insurance. In just under 2 years our rent was “gradually” increased to $144/month.
SIZE SCAM:
We were rented a unit online that was listed as
5’ x 10’ but in reality is 3.5’ x 8’. The contract does say all sizes are approximate but you have to be an idiot to think a 44% difference is approximate. If you are dumb enough to store your stuff here, look at the unit in person first.
OVERALL:
I can’t think of a redeeming quality about this place. If you want to pay for an ever increasing cost for an indoor unit that has none of the perks of an indoor unit other than HVAC and is also 44% smaller than listed, then this place is for you.

Update: Submitted a ticket for help with the issues below and the unit is now around 80° - I don't consider that climate controlled.
Prior to this entire mess, I had actually reserved a 10x10 unit for around $120 for three months. I received the SMS confirmation, but no additional information afterward. When I called the next morning during business hours, suddenly every available 10x10 unit at the location had “disappeared,” and somehow the smaller 10x7 units were now priced basically the same as the original 10x10.
It honestly felt like the typical algorithm/AI-style pricing nonsense where the second you repeatedly look at a unit or go through the reservation process, the prices magically increase or the unit suddenly becomes “unavailable.” I had already entered all of my information and gone through the reservation process, only for everything to completely change the next day.
My first experience with the Monona location was wonderful from start to finish, so honestly, what was I thinking trusting this second location without seeing it first?
The Fitchburg location is absolutely disgusting. It smells terrible, it’s dirty, there were dead bugs everywhere (flies and things I couldn’t even identify), and there is basically zero airflow in the building. At one point I could also smell marijuana, and honestly it gave the impression that some people may actually be hanging out or living out of units instead of simply storing belongings there.
Another major downside is that you have to unload everything outside with no covered loading area, which was incredibly inconvenient. I was honestly relieved there was a law enforcement officer sitting in the parking lot while I was moving my belongings but they left when I did to not return.
I was there from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the amount of random people hanging around made me very uncomfortable. At one point, a man sat in his car waiting to piggyback through the sliding glass doors using my access code, so I stopped and waited in my car until he moved along. Later, another man followed me into the stairwell area, which also made me uncomfortable enough that I stepped aside and let him go ahead of me.
When I returned with another load, there was a group directly across from my unit with the storage door partially open and partially closed. I could hear multiple voices inside, and there were garbage bags and rolling suitcases everywhere. This was also the third separate group of people I had seen throughout the day seemingly exchanging clothing/items out of bags and suitcases. They told me I could walk past them, but I was uncomfortable because I couldn’t see who else was inside the unit. I ended up setting my things around the corner, waiting a few minutes, then eventually going back downstairs for another load until they finally left.
The staircase was honestly the cleanest part of the building besides the lobby. The stainless steel inside the elevator was covered in fingerprints, grime, and marks that clearly had not been cleaned in a long time. The carts were equally disgusting. I started wearing gloves while moving because every single time I carried a load up or down, my hands were practically black afterward.
I convinced myself downsizing to a smaller unit for the same price would be fine. It was not. Now I’m just hoping my belongings don’t end up infested after the three months I rented the unit, and that the smell doesn’t stick to everything I own.
My advice: drive farther away and rent somewhere cleaner.
