I’ve spent over $6,000 at Lowe’s this year on multiple home projects, so I was really disappointed by how a simple $14 plant issue was handled.
I recently purchased a 2-gallon hydrangea that I later noticed had two broken stems which I did not notice in the store. I decided to give it a chance and planted it anyway, but unfortunately, the plant did not do well. Since Lowe’s advertises a one-year warranty on plants, I contacted customer service to ask about a refund and offered to provide photos.
I was told by an employee named Jackson that I would need to physically bring the plant back to the store because they could not issue a refund based on good faith or without receiving the product. I understand having policies, but this is a juvenile PLANT that has been planted in my yard. Am I really expected to dig it back up, put it in a bag, and bring it to the customer service desk? What would the store realistically do with a dead or failing plant at that point?
What was most frustrating was that there didn’t seem to be any effort to find a reasonable solution. My account or transaction history wasn’t even checked to verify the purchase. I ultimately decided that the $14 wasn’t worth a 30-minute drive to return the plant, but the experience left a very poor impression.
After spending thousands of dollars at Lowe’s this year, I expected better customer service and a little more common sense when dealing with a small warranty claim. Unfortunately, this experience has made me reconsider where I spend my money for future projects. It’s disappointing when a company loses customer goodwill over a $14 plant.

This is the best Lowe’s I’ve been to in many many years. There have been times I couldn’t find a human when I needed 🤨 but recently I was shopping for a fridge and went to Costco, Home Depot and here. Joe and Janet were easily the friendliest and most helpful reps of any of the stores. Did it make a difference in my decision, absolutely! That’s how you win business in a competitive market.

They’ve unfortunately decided to operate a Flock camera watching all of their customers come and go. Since this is a nationwide surveillance database that you can’t opt out of, this means I won’t feel comfortable coming here in the future, and will advise my friends to avoid it too.

The worst hardware store experience I've ever had.
My wife and I went to Lowe's today to return two items and to purchase a few other things -- including a can of paint to be tinted. The returns desk had two employees and two people being helped. Within about 10 minutes, the same two people were being helped and the line was six customers deep. No call for additional help, no apologies to the people waiting, and not even acknowledgement. Our return took about two minutes to complete, but only after about 25 minutes of standing there.
We grabbed a couple of things, hit the paint department, and waited some more -- along with several others. Finally someone showed up (a manager?) and said "our paint person is on lunch but should be back in 20 minutes". That's stupid, but whatever. We walked around for 20 minutes and came back. Still no one. We hit the button for help, got the same guy over, and he said the paint guy was just getting off lunch and would be down shortly. Zero apologies or concern. Still no one. We waited for another 20 minutes to no avail -- even while others hit the button for help. Not a single employee came back over to talk to us, help us, apologize, or anything. Most employees wouldn't even make eye contact.
If you want to make customers angry, have them wait for 20 minutes trying to get help. If you want to make customers irate, have them wait for nearly 45 minutes because "someone will be here in a sec", which clearly was never true.
I don't blame the employee -- I don't think he was even there -- I blame the management for training up a team that clearly didn't care about these customers. Meanwhile, we'll be taking our business elsewhere.
