Now, before I start this, I want to point out that I have been with Extra Space Storage in Covington for years. Until today, I have never had a problem. Truthfully, I don't interact with the staff very often because I rarely need to visit my unit, and the property has an automatic gated entry. By nature, I'm friendly, professional, and polite. Before starting my career in mental health, I worked in the service industry, so I understand that everyone has bad days and can sometimes bring that to work. What I don't understand is sacrificing basic professionalism because of one.
Today I called because I'm paying $227 a month for a 10x12 unit. Before I called, I did my research, understanding that storage units are priced competitively. Comparable 10x12 units in the surrounding area are renting for around $150 a month, and one location a little farther away quoted me $104 for a 10x15. His response was, "I can put in a request to lower it to $218," which, in my opinion, isn't an amount that would make much of a difference.
I wasn't demanding anything. I was asking if they would lower my rate to something more competitive. I simply wanted to have a conversation about why my rate had climbed so much and whether there were any options. I never got the chance.
Every single time I tried to explain the pricing I had found, I was interrupted. I couldn't finish a sentence without being talked over. He insisted the prices I had been quoted were only introductory rates and would increase after the first month. I explained that I had already asked those questions and had been given the actual monthly rates, not promotional pricing. It didn't matter.
After repeatedly being cut off, I finally raised my voice just enough to be heard and said that I wasn't finished speaking and would appreciate being allowed to finish my sentence. Instead of allowing me to speak, the employee raised his voice back at me and told me to "calm down."
I told him I was calm. I was simply tired of being interrupted and refused to continue being spoken over.
At that point, I made up my mind that I would not be keeping my unit there much longer. When I said as much, the "professional" simply hung up on me.
I called back and asked for a manager's phone number. With an attitude, he informed me that he was the manager and the only employee there. He then told me to "look it up." I told him no. I wanted the number from him. He eventually gave me the general customer service number, which ALWAYS routes you back to the location where you rent your unit.
Here's the thing. If the answer had simply been, "We don't lower rates," or, "We can't price match," I would have been disappointed, but I would have accepted it. Companies have policies. I understand that. What I don't accept is being interrupted, talked over, told to "calm down," and ultimately hung up on for asking a legitimate question about why I'm paying $227 while comparable units nearby are significantly less expensive.
Customer service isn't about giving people the answer they want. It's about treating them with basic respect. Even when the answer is no.
I've been a loyal customer for years. My account has always been on autopay. I've never caused problems, and today's interaction was genuinely so disappointing. If this is how customers are treated when they ask reasonable questions, people deserve to know.
Do better, Extra Space Storage. Loyal customers deserve better than being talked over, told to "calm down," and hung up on when they're simply trying to have a conversation.
