I placed an order for four Schluter boards at approximately $116 EACH. When I arrived for curbside pickup, the employee who brought my order out, Stephanie, immediately told me that the boards were damaged and that her manager was offering me 10% off because of the damage.
When I looked at the boards, there were torn and damaged areas along multiple edges. I responded by saying something along the lines of, “These are really damaged” or “These are completely damaged.” Stephanie immediately became defensive and responded that they were NOT completely damaged.
That interaction made absolutely no sense to me. She had just come outside and specifically told me the products were damaged and that their condition was the reason Lowe’s was offering me a discount. Yet, the moment I expressed dissatisfaction with the extent of that damage, she became defensive and started arguing about whether they were “completely” damaged.
So which is it? Are the boards damaged or not?
My issue was never that she failed to tell me about the damage—she did. My issue was her attitude once I reacted to the condition of merchandise that I had paid over $100 per board for. Her response made me feel as though I had no right to be dissatisfied because they were already offering me 10% off.
My friend, who was with me, finally asked her, “Would you put that in your own bathroom?” After that, her attitude changed somewhat, but she remained passive-aggressive throughout the encounter.
A manager was called out, and unfortunately, his attitude was not much better. Instead of simply acknowledging the situation and helping resolve it professionally, he came out with an attitude as well. He eventually told me to go inside so they could determine how much of a discount they could give me for the damaged boards.
What should have been a simple curbside pickup turned into more than 30 minutes of standing around inside the store while they tried to process the adjustment. There were issues getting the manager’s code to work, frustration between the manager and Stephanie, and back-and-forth between the employees while I stood there waiting.
At one point, Stephanie told me I could leave and that she would call me once the manager was available so they could process the remaining adjustment/refund. I told her I preferred to stay and wait until everything was completed. After the way the situation had already been handled, I was not comfortable leaving without confirmation that the adjustment to MY money had actually been processed.
Apparently, my decision to stay and wait bothered her because her attitude toward me became even worse.
At the end, I asked for my receipt. I was not given a paper receipt, so I asked whether it had been emailed to me. Her response was simply, “I don’t know.” She then told me that she “didn’t appreciate” the way I was speaking to her when she was “trying to help” me and claimed she had been trying to get me an additional 10% off.
To be clear: I DID ultimately receive a discount on the damaged boards. The discount is not the reason for this review.
The problem was the customer service and the way the entire situation was handled.
I wasn't asking Lowe’s to give me anything for free. I purchased four expensive Schluter boards at approximately $116 each. Lowe’s presented me with damaged merchandise. I expressed concern about the condition of that merchandise, and somehow I was made to feel like I was inconveniencing the employees because they had to address the problem.
Offering a customer a discount on damaged merchandise does not give employees the right to become defensive, argumentative, or passive-aggressive when the customer expresses dissatisfaction with what they received.

Don't even try to call them on the phone - they don't answer it except to put you on hold, and then you just spend as much time as you're willing to waste on hold. Customer service in the store is hit or miss. Always check for online prices before buying
