About five months later, despite normal use and following the care instructions, the fabric developed two tears. Tempur-Pedic reviewed the photos and approved my warranty claim, so there was no dispute that the protector qualified for replacement. Then came the surprise: I still have to pay $18 to receive the warranty replacement. I asked Tempur-Pedic to waive the charge because the product failed after only five months. They refused and pointed to language in the 10-year warranty allowing them to charge the customer a handling fee. That may be buried in the warranty terms, but it makes for a poor customer experience. If a premium product fails within months and the manufacturer approves the failure under warranty, the customer should not have to spend more money just to receive the replacement. The $18 itself is not the main issue. It is the principle. Tempur-Pedic advertises a 10-year warranty, but customers should know that an approved warranty claim can still leave them paying out of pocket. Between a mattress protector that lasted only five months and a warranty replacement that comes with another charge, this experience has left me questioning the value of paying a premium for the Tempur-Pedic name.
