- TRTrish RageSep 14, 20261.0I left this store feeling hurt and humiliated, especially because I have been a frequent customer and previously loved shopping here. After paying for my purchases, I was almost out the door when two employees called me back loudly enough for everyone near the checkout to hear. An employee I believe was the assistant manager held up an opened package and asked, “Care to explain this?” I told her I had no idea what it was. She then asked, “This wasn’t in your bathroom stall?” I said no and repeatedly asked why I was being questioned, but received no explanation. I even offered to let them search my bag. Chelsea declined, saying I was “good.” I actually insisted because, after being publicly confronted like that, I wanted there to be no question that I had done nothing wrong. She still declined. When I explained that I shop there frequently, Chelsea sarcastically responded, “I appreciate you.” When I told her I was offended by how I was being treated, she repeated the same response in the same dismissive manner. I may dress differently from the average person in Columbia, but I am a local business owner who works incredibly hard—often 18-hour days and sometimes literally around the clock, seven days a week. I work hard for my money, and I should be able to spend it without being singled out, stereotyped, or publicly treated like a suspected shoplifter. I sincerely hope Hobby Lobby reviews the security footage and that the employees involved recognize how accusatory, humiliating, and unprofessional this interaction was. Everyone deserves to be treated with basic dignity and respect, regardless of how they look or dress.
