I wrote so much, so scroll to the bottom for my list of advice if you’re not here for hot gossip.
So I chose Extra Space because of the “internet price” they have listed on their site. Not because it was cheaper than other places, but because there wasn’t an end date listed, which led me to believe I’d be paying that price for at least the duration of my contract. For context, every other company, very clearly, offers a discounted price for 1-3 months. I wish Extra Space would be up front like their competitors, because being notified by snail mail 3 months after move-in that my rate was increasing 100% was a real gut punch. Mind you, I have only interacted with them online. I’d at least expect an email - only sending via mail feels strange and like a tactic that likely works often. Also, the way their mail is presented, it could have easily been confused for junk mail. No envelope, just folded card stock.
After receiving the letter, I searched their site to see If this price increase is listed anywhere. It is listed, kind of, within the deep depths of the FAQ section. It just says the rate isn’t guaranteed and *might* increase to account for the economy or whatever, but I know the economy did not shift 100% for Extra Space Storage between January and March 🙄. There’s also a section that provides ways to avoid price hikes. That’s the title of that section, and they respond with Yes! You can pay 6 months in advance to lock in the price…EXCEPT the price might increase. Uhhhmmmmmm, what?? Why did you say yes??
I will say that they did mail to me in a timely fashion, roughly a month before the next bill date, which allowed me time to move to another facility after digging into Extra Space, beyond google reviews. Also, the facility is very nice, no complaints with regard to the actual storage unit.
The parking situation is awful. There is nowhere by the loading door where anyone is allowed to park. There is space. Flat and convenient space directly in front of the door, but they covered it with painted no-parking signage. That doesn’t have to be an issue, except that the only place to park feels kind of far if you have a lot to unload, and it’s at the top of a ridiculously steep hill. Getting things down the hill on a dolly without it falling off has proved literally impossible. It’s really strange and I eventually just parked in the no parking zone, which seems to be a technique many employ.
Some advice:
1. prepare for the price to, at minimum, double in a few months if you reserve online. From what I’ve read, it’ll likely continue to happen every few months. There’s no shame in being perfectly fine with that, you do you.
2. Just park in the no parking zone if you’re moving a bunch in. Just bypass the handicapped spot and get your things into the unit without risking it sledding into traffic. Or if you’re dead set on Extra Space, pick a different location. They have so very many.
3. Consider another, more upfront, place to store things. I moved to City Center Storage on the south side. It’s a small business and they have a year guarantee on the rate. I just finished migrating there today. Your unit is also accessible 24 hours/day vs Extra Space, which closes access at 10. I do not work for City Center, just found them in a Pittsburgh Reddit advice post and wanted to pass it on.
4. Definitely download the app. I’ve read folks having trouble cancelling their account or getting cancellations to stick, but it was incredibly straightforward within their app. I guess I could be charged again (my bill date would have been tomorrow), and I s’pose I’ll update if that happens.
There are other small business storage spots all around the city that aren’t trying to swindle their customers, so definitely search around before getting too excited about the discount.
5. Have a nice day!
