  Can I just say this was one of the best experiences I’ve had as a Seamstress. The owner Jack, was so helpful and put time and care into my sewing machine. He was also very knowledgeable about different machines and showed me how different things work. I struggled for months and within a day he had it fixed and up and running better than it started! Honestly, I wish I could leave this place more than five stars. This is definitely somewhere you wanna go to have your machine serviced. Plus, you can’t beat the prices!

  I’ve given this shop several tries and in the end do not recommend going here. The owner is extremely condescending— he asks questions about your machine and criticizes you in response (such as, “you got it on ebay? Don’t buy machines on ebay!”). Walking into his shop is intimidating and he’s the sort of repair guy you stay away from. I searched high and low for another repair place but found nothing. My vintage machine was in gorgeous shape but had issues with the tension knob. I ended paying Jack $100 for a fix that took him an hour. When I came to pick it up, he told me the price, which we both knew was high. He then said it was a beautiful machine and that he’d give me a lifetime warranty with the repair cost. This was the one time he was nice to me. I paid him, somewhat sold on the warranty, not having any other choice because he’d already fixed my machine. That was February. I tested the machine when I brought it home but didn’t have a chance to use it until recently (July). Within an hour, it had the same issues. I lugged my machine back in. Jack didn’t remember me or my machine. He said he would never give me such a warranty and his warranty is only 3 months. He demanded I leave the machine at the shop and go find the hand written receipt he’d given me. He yelled, as usual. I took my machine with me and went home. Given that the receipt is 5 months old there’s no point in going back. I feel ripped off and the experience interacting with him was terrible. A friend had an issue with him and I wish I’d listened. But again I felt there was no other option. I wish I had just bought a new machine with that money. If you have to drive to Jersey then do that, but avoid this place at all costs.

  My secondhand sewing machine wasn’t winding the bobbin so brought it in to Jack, he fixed it and I was able to pick it up the next day. Great customer service!

  I brought a 75 year old Necchi sewing machine in to Jack on Saturday afternoon because it was feeding improperly ( fabric veering to the left). Jack had it adjusted and ready for pickup early Monday afternoon! If I could give him more stars, I would!

  I was in the market for a used sewing machine to perform simple hemming, tayloring, and easy construction projects. DeSortes Vacuum and Sewing Center is the place to go! Mr. DeSortes delivered old-time thoughtful service (no chain store here) and knew exactly the kind of machine that would work for me. A great quality machine, the price was extremely reasonable with a repair guarantee as well. I could not be more happy with my machine and my experience at Desortes Vacuum and Sewing Center. Added bonus: it is right on the L1 subway line.
