I don't tend to write reviews, but I felt this was necessary. Yesterday, Valley Pool and Spa came to open my pool for the year. I recently bought the house, and this is the first pool I've ever owned. They did a good job of opening the pool and getting the pump running.
However, I have a major issue with their service regarding my heat pump. The service technician told me the heater would need to be replaced because mice had nested in it over the winter. He claimed the heater wouldn't turn on because wires were bad and mouse droppings had ruined the electronics.
After they left, I decided to check the system myself. Yes, there was a mouse nest on top of the electronics box, but the box itself was fully sealed with weatherproof double-sided tape. I peeled away the intact seal, opened the box, and the electronics looked perfectly fine. I grabbed a voltmeter and tested the incoming voltage, which read zero. Power simply wasn't making it to the machine.
Earlier, the tech had pointed out two electrical boxes near the equipment. He assumed one was for the pump and the other was just a junction box. I looked at this second box myself and realized it was a standard AC pull-out disconnect switch. You just have to pull the piece out, rotate it 180 degrees, and reinsert it to deliver power. Once I did this, the heater started right up and has run for the last 24 hours with no problems, heating the pool by 15 degrees.
So I want to be generous here and assume the person just didn't know better. I don't want to believe they were intentionally trying to get $2,000 to $3,000 for a new heater out of me. But either way, this is a 1-star review. They either lack the basic knowledge to turn on a heater, or they were pushing a massive, unnecessary purchase. I don't even want anyone to get in trouble for this. This seems more like a failure in training and management than it does of the service member.
