Unfortunately, what should have been a quick shopping trip left me feeling uncomfortable and unfairly treated. As I approached the entrance, I noticed a woman walking slowly with a large shopping bag that appeared to be empty. I simply continued into the store and didn’t think anything of it. Once inside, we both ended up in the jewelry section. I noticed three teenagers standing nearby who shortly walked away. The woman and I were on opposite sides of the jewelry display, so I honestly paid her no attention and continued shopping. After she walked away, I moved to the other side of the display. An employee approached me while picking up a metal hanger that appeared to have come off one of the slat walls. He asked me if I knew where the item belonged and how it had gotten on the floor. Although the interaction made me uncomfortable, I was also on the phone accepting a job offer at the time, so I chose not to engage and continued shopping. I kept the jewelry items in my hand throughout most of my visit because they were small. The only time I put them down was when I needed to reach into my purse to send a photo of my ID. When I got to the checkout, the cashier signaled to another employee that everything was okay and asked if she could report it over the radio. At that point, I became concerned that employees had been monitoring me and had assumed I was attempting to steal. What bothered me most was that I never saw anyone provide an explanation for why I was being treated this way, and I was not aware of anything I had done that would reasonably justify that suspicion. I understand that stores have a responsibility to protect their merchandise, and I have no issue with employees doing their jobs. However, there is a significant difference between being attentive to potential theft and making a paying customer feel as though they are being watched or treated like a suspect without clear cause. The entire interaction left a very negative impression on me. I came into the store simply trying to purchase jewelry for my daughter’s homecoming, and instead I left feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I will not be returning to this location. I hope management takes the time to review what happened and consider how situations like this are handled in the future. Customers should be able to shop without feeling profiled, singled out, or treated with suspicion when there is no clear reason given for it.
