The best metaphor I can manage for using the KeyMe kiosk at Kroger is it is like negotiating with an an angry woman in a 3rd world fish market. You put your key into the machine. You are quoted $7.99 for one key. Too much so you press cancel. Are you sure? You press cancel again. The price magically drops ⅓ to $5.32 so you go ahead. The machine asks if you want to buy a 2nd key and you get the 3rd one for free. You say yes but it doesn't say if you add the 3rd key yourself or if the machine does it for you. You add it yourself and start to check out but suddenly the total for 3 keys is $18.10 including tax and an 'environmental fee', whatever that is. You hit cancel, pull your key out and start over. Same deal. Cancel-cancel. $5.32. I go for a 2nd key but the price is back to $7.99 and I really don't need a 3rd key so I pull my key and start over a 3rd time. Insert my key..cancel-cancel. One key for $5.32. I check out all the way ro the end and swipe my credit card and get my receipt texted to me and then the kiosk asks if I want a 2nd key for $5.32? Yes. Now do I want the brass shavings removed from my key for an additional $2.99 per key or am I okay with it covered with brass flecks? So removing the brass flecks isn't included in the environmental charge? Apparently not so no, I will deburr my own key despite every locksmith in the world doing it quite thoroughly for free. In the end I pay $12.47 and receive 2 keys with sharp edges and brass flecks still attached, content in the knowledge my environmental fee is somehow saving the planet and not just a random add-on charge called an 'environmental fee' because 'additional bottom line profit while providing no benefit' sounds cynical and greedy. So yes, it is convenient using the KeyMe at Kroger but it is only slightly less aggravating and annoying than making a special trip to a locksmith or Home Depot and having a key copied by a real person.

I had to be talked into using a machine to make keys and am I wrong. Usually you had to buy three or four copies of a key because two or three when done by a human are wrong. Using that same caution I bought three copies of my key anticipating wrong ones and all three work better than the original.

Was a little expensive for 1 key. I get the convenience but that was ridiculous.
