Big mistake getting a storage unit here. I tried to pay the day before the auction and my card was declined due to fraud protection. I said I would call back after i got my card straightened out. That would have been a great time for them to tell me that it would be auctioned the next day!
But they didn't say a word! I received some texts from them but they didn't say anything about an auction, and I already knew my storage payment was overdue, I intended to pay it as soon as I could.
I naively thought that something like it going up for auction would be mentioned in the texts. "They never do that though," I was told over the phone. (They do though, but I will get to that.)
According to NRS108.4763, a self-storage facility is strictly required to send the official Notice of Sale to the occupant by verified physical mail AND electronic mail if they have an email on file.
In June I was struggling with finances as well, and my storage at that time was in arrears and in that instance THEY DID send a text mentioning the auction, and THEY DID send an email notice of the auction.
This further lulled me into a false sense of security about the status of my storage unit. I believed that I would receive an email and text informing me.
WHY WOULD THEY NOT MENTION IT WHEN THEY SPOKE TO ME ON THE PHONE THE DAY BEFORE WHEN I WAS TRYING TO PAY IT?
One facility manager that I spoke to on the phone was very kind about the situation, she said would call me back about getting my personal documents and photos from the unit that they had, and about possibly giving my contact info to the buyer.
Well in the meantime she must have spoken to another higher up that vetoed that idea, because I got a call back from a bruske woman that told me they had some stuff for me to pick up and hung up on me.
I had already written a review detailing my nightmarish experience having my storage unit auctioned but I deleted it since extra space replied to my review expressing some consideration for my experience.
Given the consideration they showed me in that phone call, or lack thereof, along with what transpired since (which I describe further in this post) I thought better of the courtesy I extended them by deleting my detailed one star review. .
I messed up by putting my stuff in storage while having such financial hardships that paying the monthly rent was difficult, but the multiple rate hikes certainly didn't help.
Don't rent a storage from this place unless you want to store your belongings in a rodent infested sauna that gets more and expensive with each month.
I never saw rodents but the number of rat traps they have set about premises (virtually one rat trap box per unit) was disconcerting.
Also, they lie about the climate control. The office AC is on at full blast. It's nice and cool in the office. But as for the storage units, they have one swamp cooler on the first floor and it's still sweltering down there there. The second and third floors are lucky to catch a slight draft of that humid and somewhat cooler air from the first floor when the elevator doors open . Spend a few minutes in your storage and you'll be dripping with sweat.
I will be spreading the word about how terrible it is to rent a storage unit from extra space storage at every opportunity as long as Im alive.
Oh boy, it was a delight to take a look at the crates of personal papers and photos they had for us and find that they had been filled with garbage and mail that was not ours. We got a huge tote full of mail that did not belong to us, belonged to people we do not know. It looks like someone took a bunch of trash from other units to fill the crate. On top of the mail and trash that wasn't ours, they put a case with vaginal incontinence laser devices which I thought was a nice touch!
TL DR; Dont get a storage unit here folks! They don't do things "by the book," the rate steadily increases, they possibly have a massive rodent problem, and they are NOT climate controlled!
