I had a mixed experience with Extra Space Storage. The storage unit itself was exactly what I expected. It was clean, secure, climate controlled, and I never had any issues with pests or rodents.
The business practices are what earned the low rating. They advertise a reasonable introductory rate, but once my initial three-month period ended, my rent increased significantly. It continued to go up every few months, and by the time I moved out a year later, I was paying about twice what I originally signed up for. It felt like the company relies on the fact that moving storage units is inconvenient, making it difficult to avoid the increases.
The other frustrating part was how relentlessly they asked me to leave a Google review. Every time I interacted with an employee, I was asked to leave one. I almost didn't write this review out of spite, but I decided it was more important to warn people about the frequent rent increases.
If you're only storing things for a short time, it may be fine. But if you're looking for longer-term storage, be aware that the monthly rate may increase substantially.
