Why is it that everything I buy at Lowes needs to be returned? To be fair, the employees are great and the return/exchange process is mostly painless. But sealed boxes with damaged merchandise or missing items seems to be a theme here. Being unable to complete a job because I need to driving back to Lowe's is a serious pain.

They sold us a refrigerator and was suppose to have it delivered today. They didn’t send us a cancellation text or email. We had to call to find out it’s on back order with the possibility it would never be available. Corporate offered no severance for wasting my time. The worse part is their competitors did have a refrigerator and could get it to us on time.

About a year ago, when I started a long-term home renovation project, a very helpful young employee convinced me to open a Lowe’s credit card. Unfortunately, he no longer works at this location. Since then, I have shopped here once or twice a week and spent a considerable amount of money on tools and materials.
Lately, however, every visit has become more of a hassle than it is worth. You cannot walk through an aisle without multiple employees asking what you are looking for or whether you need help. That would be a positive thing if they actually knew the products, but most of the time they have no idea what they are talking about. On several occasions, employees recommended items that were completely wrong for my application, resulting in wasted time and additional trips to return them.
If employees cannot provide knowledgeable assistance, I would honestly prefer that they leave customers alone. Even after I say that I don’t need help, another employee—or sometimes the same employee—will approach me again a few minutes later. Why repeatedly ask customers if they need help when you cannot answer their questions or help them find the correct product?
A recent experience finally convinced me to stop shopping here. I was considering a bit set costing more than $100, but I could not tell from the pictures what some of the bits actually looked like. I asked an employee if he could open the box so I could examine the set before spending $100–$150 on it. He refused and instead showed me only one smaller bit. Meanwhile, I already had approximately $500 worth of materials in my cart.
I understand that stores may have policies about opening packaging, but there was no effort to find another solution or help me make an informed purchase. At Menards, employees have opened boxes so I could examine an expensive product before buying it. They do not make customers feel like asking to see what they are purchasing is an unreasonable request.
The same Lowe’s employee was also completely unhelpful when I mentioned that a bit I had recently purchased broke after only a couple of uses. Instead of saying, “Let’s see what customer service can do,” he immediately became defensive and suggested that I purchase another one. He then told me he did not know whether customer service would exchange it and that I would have to go ask them myself. It was a poor and dismissive way to handle the situation.
Sometimes I need 20 or 30 minutes to compare products and determine what will work for my project. The employees do not know my project, and I am not interested in repeatedly explaining it to people who cannot answer basic product questions. Their constant interruptions make the experience more frustrating and time-consuming.
The lumber selection is also terrible, and common bits and other basic items are frequently missing. Meanwhile, the store is filled with miscellaneous merchandise that very few people seem to need.
The checkout employees are the main positive. They are generally friendly, efficient, and capable of doing their jobs. Unfortunately, that is no longer enough to justify shopping here. I have reached the point where I will start going somewhere else. Menards is only a few blocks away, and visiting Lowe’s has simply become too frustrating.
One final note for the customer-service representative who may respond by asking me to email this review to another department: I am not going to do that. I have already taken the time to write and submit my feedback. If Lowe’s needs this review forwarded or documented internally, the person reading it can forward it. Please stop asking customers to perform additional work so the company can properly record and address feedback it has already received.

These charges are likely authorization holds that are placed throughout the life cycle of your order to ensure the funds are reserved for your purchase. When you place an order, your payment method is authorized for the full amount of the purchase. As items from your order ship, your payment is charged and the authorization is no longer held by Lowe’s. Orders shipped in multiple shipments will be charged separately at time of shipment; therefore, you may see multiple charges, but they'll never exceed the full amount of your order. For orders with longer lead times, your method of payment will be reauthorized to ensure funds remain available until your item is shipped. If you observe multiple pending authorizations, please contact your financial institution as each bank’s policies differ on how long authorizations are held.
