Horrible! My experience with Lowe's (Grandville, MI) has been absolutely unacceptable.
I purchased a brand-new John Deere zero-turn mower from Lowe's, and when it was delivered, it arrived filthy. It clearly looked like it had been sitting outside for an extended period. Dirt and grime covered the machine, and there was already rust forming on several of the bolts. While the rust isn't severe enough to affect operation, that's not the point. I paid for a new mower, not one that had already been exposed to the elements before I ever used it.
When I called the store, the experience only got worse. The initial customer service was terrible. After asking to speak with a manager, I was disconnected. Instead of getting help over the phone, I had to drive to the store and speak with a manager in person.
The explanation I received wasn't helpful. I was told they keep the mowers outside because they sell through them quickly. Since when does Lowe's get to decide that a customer buying a brand-new mower should receive one that's been sitting outside in the rain and weather? If I choose to leave my mower outside after I own it, that's my decision, not Lowe's'.
When I purchased the mower, I was asked if I wanted it assembled and delivered. That gave me the reasonable expectation that a new mower would be professionally assembled and delivered in like-new, showroom condition. I certainly didn't expect to receive one that had been sitting outside exposed to all sorts of weather while waiting to be sold.
What was even more frustrating was that I was repeatedly asked whether the mower was damaged, both during my initial phone call and again at the store. That completely misses the point. My concern isn't whether it still operates, it's the condition in which a brand-new product was delivered.
The manager offered to come wipe the mower down, but that isn't a viable solution. I was also told that next time I should refuse delivery by not signing for it. I explained that I signed simply to acknowledge receipt. It never crossed my mind that I would need to inspect a brand-new mower for dirt, rust, or signs of weather exposure before the delivery guys left. I wasn't expecting to perform a pre-purchase inspection on something sold as new.
Even the owner's manual had been completely soaked. The yellow ink from the pages transferred onto the plastic bag. They replaced the manual when I brought it in to the store, but again, that's beside the point. None of this should have happened with a new purchase.
When you buy a brand-new car, you don't expect to wash it before driving it off the lot. The same standard should apply to a major purchase like a John Deere mower or any other purchase.
The only bright spot in this entire experience was the representative on Lowe's regular customer service line. He was professional, empathetic, and actually listened. He created a formal report to be sent to the store manager, and I appreciate his willingness to help.
At this point, I'm debating whether to return the mower altogether. For a purchase of this size, I expected far better quality control and customer service.
If you're considering buying a riding mower or making any major purchase, I'd strongly recommend shopping with a local dealer or just about anywhere else before choosing Lowe's. Selling a product in this condition and then defending it instead of taking ownership is not the level of service customers should accept. How have our standards become so low that a customer has to argue over receiving a brand-new piece of equipment in clean, proper condition? What frustrates me most is the attitude that this is somehow acceptable and that customers should simply lower their expectations. I shouldn't have to write a lengthy Google review just to point out something that should have been a basic part of the buying experience.
