Review of Extra Space Storage – Wormans Mill Court, Frederick, Maryland
I rarely leave negative reviews, but after two major incidents within the first few weeks of renting this facility, I feel obligated to warn other customers.
The most recent incident occurred today. The freight lift, which has been unreliable since I rented the unit, failed completely. Previously, the only way to make it move was for someone to physically hold the door while it ascended. Today it would not operate at all.
The only luggage cart for the facility was trapped inside the elevator. From the second floor, you can actually see the elevator sitting on the first floor, but the doors will not open. That means customers cannot retrieve the cart or use the lift. Aside from being extremely inconvenient, this appears to be a safety issue.
Unfortunately, I had already unloaded numerous heavy boxes of medical books before discovering the elevator was unusable. I carried them across the facility by hand, repeatedly climbed the stairs—three trips of approximately 35 steps each—to ensure the second-floor door was fully closed, and still could not get the lift to work. I ultimately wasted well over an hour.
I first called the office before business hours and received no answer. I then walked to the office, where no one answered the door despite a vehicle being present, a dog barking inside, and someone apparently living in the apartment above the office. When I rented the unit, I was told management would be available on-site, but that has not been my experience.
Eventually I called Extra Space Storage’s customer service line. The representative was courteous and said someone would arrive within approximately 15 minutes. I was still waiting afterward.
This was not my first serious problem.
Shortly after renting the unit, I entered the facility well before the posted 10:00 p.m. closing time. When I finished unloading around 11:00 p.m., the exit gate would not open to let me leave. I exited through a side pedestrian gate to see if I could trigger the main gate from the outside. The pedestrian gate locked behind me, leaving my storage unit, purse, wallet, passport, driver’s license, money, credit cards, and car trapped inside the secured area while I was locked out.
After waiting for assistance that never came, I ultimately had to call the police. Initially, the only suggestion was to continue calling the same number that had not responded. It was only after I pointed out that emergency responders would certainly have a way to access the property if someone were trapped inside that an effort was finally made to resolve the situation.
Two significant operational failures in just a few weeks have cost me hours of my time, unnecessary physical labor, and considerable frustration.
The customer service representative on the national phone line was professional and helpful. Unfortunately, the condition of the facility and the lack of reliable on-site assistance have been unacceptable.
If you depend on reliable elevator access or expect prompt assistance when equipment fails, I would recommend looking carefully at other storage options before renting here.

Ashley Sutton, the store manager, is extremely rude, aggressive and unprofessional. Today, I called to inform about the fact that the storage facility is extremely hot. I also recalled that this is a reoccurring issue and that back in May , she was made aware of it.
Ashley responded by asking " do you own a home?" then suggested that I should stop renting out of this location, where I have been for several months. Another tenant, named Susan, was present during my call with Ashley and could be heard complaining about the extreme heat, just like I did. During our phone interaction, Ashley was on speaker phone and other Tenants witnessed her extremely unprofessional and rude behavior ( she kept on talking over me).
Ashley referred to me, the paying Client as: " Hon" and in a condescending manner suggested that I should take my patronage to a different company.
Susan, the witness/ other Tenant was so offended by the manner in which Ashley Sutton spoke to me. That she felt it was necessary to go to the main Office where she informed Mathew Lunstrum.
Clearly, Ashley forgot that the agreement that I signed states that these storage units are supposed to be climatized and free of pests. She's selling these units as " climate controlled" but that's False.
Back in May when I noticed the lack of climate adjustment, Ashley lied and stated that it would get fixed. Today, she rudely responded that someone would get called but the issue will not be fixed on this date. If Ashley was a "homeowner" she would know that once the HVAC SYSTEM is fixed / a Tech is in fact called ; the lack of climate adjustment issue doesn't keep on occuring.

My experience with Extra Space Storage in Frederick Maryland was fantastic from the start of a phone call inquirying what is available and specific cost to then meeting at the front desk office getting directions to my new storage unit. They made everything so easy and answered all my questions in a professional friendly customer service way. I am very impressed with the website with the details of size and explaination video of what will fit, as I am a visual person, it made my stress level at ease. I love that they have multi locations in many states too!
Thank you Extra Space Storage !
For the last 7 months the lift has been broken. I've been trying to empty out the storage unit so I can move out but this problem is persistently there. The lady in the office literally told me to carry a dresser down the steep steps since that option was still available. SEVEN MONTHS of having to pay for something I NO LONGER want because they can't keep their facility running correctly
I think those that work in customer service here are actually really good. I can usually get a hold of them, and they rectify whatever problems. So they're great. The unit itself is clean and seems safe enough to me. Plenty of room to load and unload, and is in a relatively good spot.
When I first moved my stuff here back in December, my first experience was my original unit having a lock on it. No big deal--call them up and they said to just move in another unit. Crisis averted. Since then, I have had some occasional difficulties actually accessing my space, but nothing for the past few months. Only lame issue is that no one ever seems to return the cart to the appropriate area, or perhaps there aren't enough carts, and the ones that I've used aren't in the best shape. What sucks the most actually is when you're moving stuff in and out is each main door to access your unit has this stupid, 0.5/1.0-inch lip, which, if you managed to find a cart, makes it damn near impossible to move it into the storage area. Especially if you have anything heavy on the cart. Just annoying, but no big.
The big problem I have is that my rate went from $112/mo to $212/mo, which will begin in March (not including insurance). An 80% increase seems pretty steep to me, especially when the contract states the suggested rental rate is $181. Maybe they can use this extra $1,200 they'll receive from me this year to purchase a few new carts.
