I had a frightening elevator experience at the Hawaiʻi Kai Extra Space Storage location that raises serious safety concerns.
I arrived around 9:45 p.m. and loaded all my belongings into the right elevator just before 10:00. At exactly 10:00, my access code was denied with a “Please See Manager” message. I later learned that access to the upper floors shuts off at 10:00, which I had not experienced at other Extra Space locations.
At first, I could still reopen the right elevator from the lobby. I did not hold the door open because I did not want to damage or disable it. After several attempts, however, the right elevator stopped opening, leaving all my belongings trapped inside. Only the left elevator would respond.
I entered the left elevator to see whether I could go upstairs or recall the right elevator. The doors then closed. I repeatedly pressed both the Ground Floor button and the Door Open button, but neither worked.
This is important because company representatives later suggested that I simply arrived late or failed to press the correct buttons. That is not true. I pressed both buttons repeatedly, and the emergency operator also instructed me to press Door Open and then every floor button. None worked. The operator ultimately had to remotely release the doors so I could exit.
Afterward, I spent more than 30 minutes calling multiple Extra Space numbers and trying to reach an emergency contact, with no success. Hawaiʻi Kai Towne Center Security responded and stayed with me for about another 30 minutes. They repeatedly knocked and called out at the connected manager’s residence, but no one answered.
No employee or emergency contact ever arrived, and I had to leave my belongings trapped inside the elevator overnight.
My complaint is not that access ends at 10:00 p.m. My concern is that once access was denied, the Ground Floor and Door Open buttons did not work, and there was no reachable on-site manager or after-hours emergency contact. Had the emergency phone or remote operator failed, I do not know how I would have exited.
I have filed a complaint with the Hawaiʻi Occupational Safety and Health Division’s Boiler and Elevator Inspection Branch and requested an inspection. I hope Extra Space takes this seriously before someone experiences an even more dangerous emergency.
