Question 1

Is a stone retaining wall better than a timber retaining wall?

Accepted Answer

While timber retaining walls can cost less initially, natural stone is often the better long-term investment. Stone is more durable, withstands the elements, and provides a timeless appearance that complements the mountain landscape of Ellijay, Blue Ridge, Jasper, and Murphy. Although the upfront investment may be higher, stone typically lasts longer and can be more cost-effective over the life of the wall.

Question 2

How do I know if I have an erosion or drainage problem?

Accepted Answer

Signs of erosion include soil or mulch washing away after heavy rain, exposed roots, gullies forming in your yard, settling soil, or water consistently flowing across a slope. Start by checking your gutters and downspouts to make sure they are directing water away from your home and foundation. Standing water, muddy areas, or water flowing toward a retaining wall can also indicate a drainage problem that should be addressed before erosion causes further damage.

Question 3

Does drainage affect the strength and longevity of a retaining wall?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Proper drainage is critical to the structural integrity of a retaining wall. Water that becomes trapped behind a wall creates hydrostatic pressure, which can cause a wall to lean, bulge, crack, or eventually fail. A properly designed retaining wall accounts for water movement and drainage behind the wall, helping relieve pressure and protect the wall for years to come.

Question 4

How do you determine the size and amount of stone needed for a retaining wall or stonework project?

Accepted Answer

Every property is different. The required length, width, height, and amount of stone depend on factors such as the slope, elevation changes, soil conditions, drainage, available space, and the purpose of the project. Whether you're building a retaining wall, patio, walkway, steps, or another stone feature, Martin Landscape evaluates the property and project requirements to determine the appropriate materials and dimensions.
