Question 1

What kinds of palms and tropical plants do you carry?

Accepted Answer

Our St. Petersburg nursery features nearly two acres of premium South Florida-grown palms, tropical plants, and trees. Inventory is hand-selected and rotates daily. We typically stock a diverse selection of palms such as Christmas palms, foxtail palms, arecas, date palms, and Bismarcks, along with smaller accent and container plants suited for beds, pool areas, and privacy screens. As one of the largest palm retailers in Pinellas County, our availability varies week to week. If you're searching for a particular species or size, call 727-343-0607.

Question 2

Are you open to the public, or do you only sell to landscapers and contractors?

Accepted Answer

We serve both homeowners and professional landscapers and contractors throughout Pinellas County. Palm Trees Direct is a retail nursery that welcomes the public. You're encouraged to walk the lot and hand-select your own palms instead of ordering from photographs. Many customers find that viewing mature specimens in person influences their final selection. Our location is 8440 Bay Pines Blvd. in St. Petersburg.

Question 3

How much does a palm tree cost in St. Petersburg?

Accepted Answer

Palm tree pricing depends on four factors: species, overall height, single versus multi-trunk configuration, and whether the palm is field-grown or containerized. A small container palm for a planting bed differs significantly from a mature multi-trunk specimen requiring equipment for installation. We offer competitive pricing and provide specific quotes by phone or in person. Call 727-343-0607 with the species and approximate height you're considering.

Question 4

Which palm trees grow best in St. Petersburg and coastal Pinellas County?

Accepted Answer

Coastal Pinellas County falls within USDA zones 9b to 10a, which accommodates a broad range of palms. However, sandy, salt-exposed soil near the Gulf limits suitable options. Sabal palms, Florida's state tree, offer exceptional salt and wind tolerance. Medjool and Canary Island date palms provide a formal, striking appearance. Foxtail, Bismarck, Christmas, and areca palms are also widely used and thrive in local conditions. The best choice depends on your specific light, soil, salt exposure, and irrigation conditions. Our staff can guide you through these considerations on site, and our designer can create a comprehensive plan for your entire property.

Question 5

I know I want to redo my yard, but I do not know what to plant. Can someone help me plan it?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we have a professional landscape designer on staff who specializes in this type of project. Rather than guessing at species and spacing, the designer visits your property, evaluates the space, and creates a scaled plan indicating placement for all elements. You'll receive sample photographs of recommended plants and materials so you can visualize the outcome before installation begins. You'll keep a PDF of the plan and receive a written proposal for the work. The first revision is included at no additional cost. Most plans are completed within a week of the site visit.

Question 6

Are there wind-resistant palm trees for Florida hurricane season?

Accepted Answer

Yes, palm species differ considerably in their wind tolerance. Palms generally perform better than broadleaf shade trees during storms because their flexible trunks bend instead of breaking. Native species like the sabal palm are among the most storm-resistant options in Pinellas County. Proper placement is equally important as species selection. Maintaining adequate distance between mature canopy and root systems and your roofline, foundation, pool cage, and utility lines contributes as much to storm resilience as the species itself.

Question 7

Do you deliver and install, or can I take a palm home myself?

Accepted Answer

We accommodate both options. Many customers transport smaller container palms home the same day. However, larger specimens requiring equipment are best handled by our installation crews. We provide delivery and installation services throughout Pinellas County, including St. Petersburg, Seminole, Largo, Pinellas Park, Clearwater, Dunedin, Gulfport, Kenneth City, Tierra Verde, Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, and St. Pete Beach. Managing the nursery, delivery, and installation under one operation ensures a single point of contact and seamless coordination.

Question 8

When is the best time to plant palm trees in Florida?

Accepted Answer

Palms establish most quickly when planted during warmer months, making late spring through summer the optimal time. During this period, soil temperatures are warm, root growth is vigorous, and natural rainfall patterns support new plantings. That said, Pinellas County's climate permits planting throughout the year with appropriate watering practices, and off-season installations typically schedule more quickly. Consistent watering during the establishment period matters more than the specific time of year.

Question 9

How much does landscape design cost, and what is included?

Accepted Answer

Design services begin at $125 for a front yard or backyard plan and $195 for a complete residential plan. Additional design work is billed at $65 per hour, and the first revision is included. Services include an electronically produced, scaled plan of your property with detailed graphics, sample photographs of recommended plants and hardscape materials, a PDF copy for your records, and a written installation proposal. If you have a survey or site plan of your property, providing it helps the designer account for setbacks, easements, and irrigation systems.

Question 10

How do I care for a newly planted palm tree?

Accepted Answer

Watering is the most critical factor during the first several months. A newly planted palm has a reduced root system and requires deep, consistent watering while it re-establishes. Light, frequent watering is a common error. Avoid fertilizing until the palm has settled in, then apply a slow-release palm-specific formula. Florida's sandy soil drains nutrients rapidly, and palms require potassium and magnesium in ratios not provided by standard lawn fertilizers. Do not remove green fronds. Our staff can provide care instructions specific to your species before you leave.
