I've rented here for years — a single climate-controlled unit for my business, chosen specifically because the items in it are sensitive to temperature and humidity, and chosen with elevator access because that's how I get to it.
This summer the elevators were out of service for close to a month. Staff repeatedly told me it was Pepco's fault. It wasn't. Nothing appeared on Pepco's outage reporting, no other business in the area lost power, and the building itself had power the entire time — the elevators did not. I paid for an elevator-access unit that had no elevator access for nearly a month. The compensation offered was a $25 credit.
The bigger problem is what the outage did to the building. With the elevators down, doors to the outside and on every floor were propped open, letting heat and humidity into the interior — including the climate-controlled space customers pay a premium for. I am still going through my items to assess the effect.
Both times I raised this, I dealt with the same employee. The first conversation was about the elevator failure and the fact that I was paying for access I didn't have; he was confrontational about it. The second was my renewal. For years this location offered incentives to prepay and commit to longer terms. This time I was told bluntly that it's month-to-month, that they can raise the rent as much as they want every month, that prepaying changes nothing — and, in the end, that I should just move out.
I run a business and manage a sales organization. I know what it costs to put someone in a customer-facing role who talks to a multi-year customer that way. The elevator failure was bad. Being told my business isn't worth keeping is why I'm actually leaving.

The Florida Avenue location was experiencing elevator issues due to power outages earlier in the week. Kevin was very upfront with me regarding the situation and gave me an alternative to using their location. After further discussion, he came up with an even better solution and was very helpful with me and my move. That location’s customer service is first class

The service overall has been good, and we’ve generally had a positive experience. The buildings and spaces are consistently well maintained. Unfortunately, we recently encountered a serious issue: our two storage units are on the 8th floor, and the elevator has been out of service for over a week. My wife is disabled, and this has made accessing our belongings very difficult especially for her. And incapacitated us for storing bigger items. We’re paying full price for a unit we cannot use at its fullest.
We also requested to have our account balance frozen for the duration of the outage, but received negative response. The lack of urgency, communication, and basic consideration for customers with disabilities is unacceptable. Being forced to climb eight flights of stairs just to check on our property is both unsafe and unreasonable. This situation has been a major disservice.

This is my second time (Florida Avenue location) getting a storage from here. The first time was an amazing experience, enhance why I am back. I first spoke to Danielle over the phone and she was nothing but AMAZING. She took the time to explain everything and found several ways that I could save on storage for my daughters belongs. Within minutes, I received a call from Katrina about my storage. We were originally given a storage on the 6th floor, but unfortunately the elevator was not working. Katrina immediately accommodated us and gave us a storage on the 3rd floor where we could access from the rear which made things so much easier.
Danielle and Katrina are real assets to the company. Thank you once again for making my experience refreshing.
