I was at Cohen’s key shop today and had excellent service from Mel. I got there with a key fob that needed a battery replaced. I tried to replace it myself and could not get the case back together. It has been a problem in the past that I had the case even taped, he helped me, put Together the old spare key fob, so I have a spare and set me up with a new key fob that works perfectly. Once we were done, he went outside to make sure I could use the spare key that is included in case, should ever be locked out
Couldn’t ask for better help I was glad to have him he was an excellent service provider and Cohen‘s key shop should be happy to have him. Linda K.

Mel helped me. He cut my Honda Civic key and programmed the chip to my vehicle. The price point was great, and now I have a spare key!

Rekeying typically costs less than replacing entire locks. Price depends on lock type, number of pins, and quantity. Most residential rekeying runs $15-35 per lock, making it an affordable security upgrade.
What's the difference between rekeying and replacing locks?
Rekeying changes the internal pins so old keys won't work, while keeping the same lock hardware. Replacement installs completely new locks. Rekeying costs less when your current locks function properly.
Can you make keys for older locks?
Yes, we can duplicate keys for vintage and antique locks using traditional techniques. We stock various key blanks and can hand-file keys for unusual lock types common in older New Haven homes.
How long does car key programming take?
Most transponder key programming takes 15-30 minutes once we have the correct key blank. Complex smart keys or multiple keys may require additional time. We handle most major vehicle makes and models.
Do deadbolts really improve home security?
Deadbolts significantly strengthen door security when properly installed. The extended bolt goes deeper into the door frame than spring latches, making forced entry much more difficult for potential intruders.
What's a master key system?
Master key systems allow multiple levels of access using different keys. One master key opens all locks, while individual keys only work for specific areas. Perfect for businesses or multi-unit properties.
When should I change my safe combination?
Change safe combinations after employee turnover, security breaches, or if multiple people knew the old code. Also recommended every 1-2 years as preventive security maintenance for valuable contents.
Can smart locks be hacked?
Quality smart locks use encryption and are difficult to hack when properly configured. Choose reputable brands, keep firmware updated, and use strong passwords. Traditional backup keys provide additional security.
Why won't my key turn smoothly?
Sticking keys usually indicate worn lock cylinders, debris buildup, or bent keys. Graphite lubricant can help temporarily, but persistent issues often require cylinder cleaning or replacement for reliable operation.
What's the strongest residential lock grade?
Grade 1 deadbolts offer the highest residential security, meeting commercial standards for strength and durability. They resist forced entry better than Grade 2 or 3 locks through superior construction and materials.
How Do Access Control Systems Prevent Unauthorized Entry?
Electronic access control systems use keypads, card readers, or biometric scanners to verify identity before granting building access. These systems create a digital barrier that replaces traditional mechanical locks with programmable entry points.
