Apparently the self-storage business model is:
“Here’s a great introductory rate!”
You move an entire house worth of stuff in.
Then it’s: “Good news! Your 20x10 unit is now ‘in demand,’ so we’re raising your rent by over $100 a month.”
It’s amazing how “demand” always seems to go up after you’re the one who has to rent a truck, load everything, and move it all. They know moving storage units is expensive and exhausting, so they bet most people will just pay the increase.
I didn’t.
To be fair, the facility itself was clean (minus a mouse every now and then), and the staff I interacted with were polite, but that doesn’t make up for the pricing practices. They were not willing to negotiate rates to keep me on as a customer. It would have been much more helpful if the potential for significant rate increases had been clearly explained upfront.
If you’re shopping for storage, make sure you ask how often rates increase and what happens after the promotional price ends. The cheapest rate on day one isn’t always the cheapest in the long run. I will not be renting from them again.
