I've been a Leslie's customer for many years and have probably seen 14 managers come and go, along with more employees than I can count. Retail turnover happens, but the pace at this location has always struck me as unusually high.
That said, I want to recognize that several team members over the years have been outstanding. Some of the staff who have been around for two or three years have provided consistently good service, taken the time to answer questions, and helped build customer loyalty. There are employees from past years whom I genuinely miss seeing when I come into the store. They knew their customers, understood the products, and made the experience easy.
My visit today was different.
I came in for a water test and to restock chemicals after returning from an extended trip during which I experienced an algae outbreak. I noticed there was a new manager working and introduced myself. She never introduced herself in return, and I only learned her name by partially seeing her name badge. While that may seem like a small detail, it contributed to an interaction that felt impersonal from the outset.
I made what I intended as simple requests: use whatever pool water was needed for testing and return the remainder, and please do not print paperwork I didn't need.
From the start, the interaction felt tense. When I asked that the remaining sample water be returned, the bottle was placed back across the counter in a manner that immediately felt dismissive. Throughout the conversation, I felt repeatedly corrected on terminology, contradicted on points that were not material to my purchase, and generally made to feel as though I was being talked at rather than helped.
I found myself asking for clarification several times, not because I didn't understand the information, but because I was taken aback by the tone and delivery. What should have been a routine discussion about pool chemistry and replenishing products became an unnecessarily uncomfortable interaction.
One additional point: I purchased enough chemicals that I had more than was comfortable to carry. No assistance was offered. Instead, after the transaction, the receipt was dropped on the counter near me abruptly and the manager immediately moved on to the next customer.
That may sound minor, but it added to the overall impression of the visit. This was not a complicated service issue. I came in for water testing and to restock chemicals. The interaction should have been straightforward, especially for a long-time customer who has had many good experiences at this location.
To be fair, everyone has difficult days. Managing a retail store is not easy, and I have no way of knowing what challenges someone may be dealing with when they walk through the door. This may simply have been an off day.
However, after years of shopping at this location, I know the difference between a routine transaction and one that leaves a customer feeling unwelcome. My hope is that today's experience was the exception rather than the new normal.
I remain a Leslie's customer and appreciate many of the employees who have served this location over the years. My feedback is offered in that spirit. The reason I am taking the time to write it is because I have seen what good service looks like at this store, and I know this location is capable of delivering it. Today - epic fail.
