The owner came over and provided a reasonable quote with options. A week later several other people spent several a few hours taking down and carting away a 50-foot fir that was a few yards from the house (overhanging the roof). Paid quoted amount online without issue.

Frequently Asked Questions About Joe Grab Tree Service
What is the average cost of residential tree removal in the Portland area?
The cost of tree removal in Portland varies based on factors such as tree size, location, and accessibility. Larger or hazardous trees typically incur higher costs. Street tree removal requires a permit, which can affect the total price. Many cities also mandate replacement planting after tree removal, potentially adding to the overall project expense.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my property?
In most Portland metro areas, a permit is required for removing trees 12 inches or larger in diameter when measured at 4.5 feet above ground. Street trees always need a permit for removal, regardless of size. Certain areas, such as those with environmental or historic designations, may require permits for any tree removal.
How do I know if a tree on my property is dangerous or needs to be removed?
Trees that are dead, dying, structurally unsound, or too close to structures may need removal. Hazardous trees are often the primary reason cities approve removal permits. For an accurate assessment of a tree's condition and potential risks, it's advisable to consult a professional arborist.
What time of year is best for trimming or pruning trees in the Portland climate?
The dormant season is generally preferred for routine trimming to promote healthy growth. However, it's important to note that in Portland, pruning street trees may require a permit if the branches being removed exceed half an inch in diameter, regardless of the time of year.
How can I tell if my tree is diseased or dying?
Indicators of a diseased or dying tree include the presence of dead branches, sparse foliage, fungal growth, or a noticeable lean. In many municipalities, the removal of trees in poor or fair condition is often approved when supported by an arborist's professional evaluation.
What is the difference between tree trimming, pruning, and deadwooding?
Tree trimming typically focuses on shaping or providing clearance, while pruning aims to enhance structural health. Deadwooding involves the removal of dead limbs to improve safety. It's worth noting that for street trees, even pruning may require official approval in some areas.
Will removing a tree increase sunlight or impact my landscaping?
Tree removal often results in increased sunlight exposure, which can benefit lawns and gardens. However, it's important to consider that some cities require the planting of replacement trees to maintain overall canopy health, which may influence your long-term landscape planning.
How long does a typical tree removal or trimming service take?
Most tree removal or trimming services can be completed within a day. However, the duration may increase for larger trees, challenging access situations, or if permit reviews are required. It's important to note that permit approval timelines can vary significantly, sometimes taking several weeks in certain municipalities.
Should I try to remove a tree myself or hire a professional tree service?
Tree removal can be hazardous and often requires specific permits. Many cities prohibit work without proper permits, and substantial fines may be imposed for unauthorized removal. Engaging a certified arborist ensures compliance with local regulations and prioritizes safety throughout the process.
What happens to the wood and debris after a tree is removed?
Most tree services include the removal of logs, branches, and wood chips as part of their service. Some cities may require replanting to maintain urban canopy standards. Depending on the service options available, you may have the option to keep wood for firewood or mulch if desired.
