I’ve used the self-checkout lanes at Lowe’s many times before and have always found the interface simple and convenient. However, after scanning just one item, an employee hovered over me the entire time, despite me letting her know that I would ask for help if needed or that the machine would alert her if there was an issue. This made me feel very uncomfortable. Eventually, I asked to use a staffed checkout, but there were no open lanes other than customer service, so I had to complete my purchase there. What made the experience worse was that when I glanced back at the self-checkout, it was busy with other customers, and the same employee was simply standing there—not hovering or being overly attentive as she had been with me. This inconsistency left me feeling singled out and uneasy. I don’t wish this experience on anyone, and I hope the store will address this so all customers can feel comfortable and respected.
