After calling the business, they stated that is was adjusting my rate to the market demand based on their systems algorithms. They also stated that all the companies in the area are doing this. This 100% rate hike was not listed online, or in the rental agreement. It seems that their market strategy is to lure people in with artificially low rates so that customers will go to all the work of moving their belongings into a unit. After a few months, the company then arbitrarily jacks up the price of the unit by 100%, giving an explanation that all the other places in town do the same thing. Then every 6 months after they levy another massive rate hike, saying that it is matching market demand. They are taking advantage of the time, money, and effort it takes to move out of a unit.
