I feel highly motivated to comment on an experience with SMUD that will remain with me always!
As a quiet, ordinary morning passed by, I happened to look out the sliding doors to our back porch/patio. There were leaves and branches falling from the enormous tree growing just across our back fence. We had received a notification letter from SMUD that some maintenance work needed to be performed back there. Some branches were growing thickly and depositing dead foliage into the grass below, and branches were beginning to wind up the electric wires. It was on the way to black outs and maintenance fees. But it was standard maintenance and I just couldn't recall the date they had indicated they would be there. Suddenly, I felt confused. How could those branches fall silently down? There had been no noise of oversized trucks maneuvering, no teams of workers communicating, nothing of the normal noise. Yet here were the physical signs of the work progressing. My dog was resting on the patio floor, birds were singing happily in the trees. Everything was quietly normal.
Then I saw silent movement in the tree and a man, dressed in SMUD attire, emerged from the branches. He was carrying a large pole and going back and forth quietly. I rubbed my eyes and considered my last 24 hours. There was no reason for me to hallucinate this impossible scene.
He moved all around that huge tree. Large branches floated down silently. It was dream-like.
When he finished he had removed all the branches that created problems for humans or the tree itself. There was no scaring or destructive piles of greenery. The branches were removed as quickly and quietly as they had fallen.
I grew up on a tree farm in the
mid-West, I have never seen a more efficient or intelligent pruning --anywhere.
I spoke to the gentleman and he very politely responded to my questions. He was contracted to SMUD. His equipment was SOUNDLESS! I wouldn't have known he was there unless I noticed the silently falling branches and leaves.
EVERY TREE LOVER SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS KIND OF MAINTENANCE!
So advanced, so kind to the trees, and all humans in the vicinity!
THIS SYSTEM SHOULD BE ADOPTED BY EVERYONE!
I APPLAUD SMUD for their hiring
of this incredible individual.
He was light years ahead of his time. A baby could sleep under the tree and not be disturbed.
I ADMIT I AM A TREE-LOVER
BUT
ISN'T EVERYBODY?

SMUD is going to log over 2,700 acres of old growth oak trees in Sacramento County. This is absolutely unacceptable. Oak trees are native to california, they provide habitat for hundreds of species, and are fire resistant. If you cut these trees down, you are not green energy! You are part of the problem! Stop this now! Utilize vertical energy installations! We don’t need to do this!
