I had never heard of the concept of "functional strength training". I just knew that as female north of 50, I needed to get stronger, more mobile, and more energetic-again. I needed expert instruction on correct technique, accountability, and supportive environment. At this point in my life, the regular gym environment is a bit intimidating and doing my own fitness videos at home-well I just won't keep at it. After researching pilates and other modalities-I came across Alloy in Kirkland, "over 40 functional group personal strength training"...and it's close to my home. I started researching the concepts-strength training for everyday tasks, improved posture, multi muscle group exercises 2-3 x week. I scheduled a consult with Eli and got started.
The In-Body Test is a scientific formula showing body composition of fat, muscle, water percentages which was completely confusing to me. But, it's a starting point, and repeated after about every month, to track progress. Adjustments are made after analyzing the report.
So far, I'm about 2 months in. Not going to lie, it's not easy, but I've been "out of shape" for years! But I don't want "easy", I want to work hard and get stronger. The great thing, is the class size is limited to 6, and the trainers keep a close watch on all of us to correct and encourage. The goal-get stronger and not get injured! There are always modifications to each exercise-the trainers have our histories on an I-Pad at hand; past injuries, surgeries, current challenges, goals-nothing is cookie cutter, everything is individualized. Being the training is geared toward, but not limited to, "over 40" most of us have had some sort of injury, frozen shoulders, neck and back, knee pain etc! At the same time, they WILL challenge us to progress-no slacking.
Another great thing is so far for me, none of the exercises have been repeated. Each one has been a little different. The next day, every muscle is sore-it is VERY EFFICIENT that way. Not very many of us can spend every day at the gym on different muscle groups. This hits them all -and cardio too.
Scheduling a class on the app is easy. So far, I've been able to go at my preferred dates/times. The trainers-Matt, Erin and Eli are super friendly, supportive and knowledgable.
So far, I'm really happy with Alloy and look forward to continuing my functional strength training.
