Club Pilates Edmonds Shoreline is a boutique Pilates studio specializing in reformer fusion classes for anyone, at any age or fitness level. Pure to Joseph Pilates’ original Reformer-based Contrology Method, but modernized with group practice and expanded state-of-the-art equipment, Club Pilates offers high-quality, life-changing training at a surprisingly affordable price.
I’ve taken over 30 classes at this Club Pilates studio over the past few months, and my experience with nearly every instructor has been positive—until today’s class with Helen. If you’re in the Asian community or simply want a supportive, inclusive environment, I strongly recommend avoiding her classes.
Unlike other instructors who demonstrate movements while giving verbal cues, Helen provided only verbal instructions and refused to demo, even though there were only 5–6 students in class and plenty of available equipment. When I had difficulty following some steps and asked for clarification, she became impatient. In front of the class, she asked me, “Do you even understand English?”
English is not my first language, but I’ve lived and worked in the U.S. for over 10 years. I do not believe this was an issue of comprehension, but rather unclear instruction. The tone and wording of that comment were humiliating and deeply uncomfortable.
When I asked for more detailed guidance, she said the class was only 50 minutes and that if she “wasted” five minutes explaining to each person, we would run out of time. This made me feel pressured, anxious, and worried about doing the movements incorrectly instead of supported in learning.
After class, I approached her respectfully with constructive feedback and suggested that demonstrating while giving instructions might help, as every other instructor at this studio does. She initially dismissed my feedback, said I was the only one who didn’t understand, and even stated that I was the problem. She refused to consider any changes.
As a first-generation immigrant, experiences like this are especially painful. Whether intentional or not, the comment about my English and the lack of patience felt discriminatory and unwelcoming. Fitness spaces should be inclusive, respectful, and supportive—this experience was the opposite.
Because of this, I went to the front desk immediately after class to cancel my membership. I hope management takes concerns like this seriously and ensures that all members are treated with dignity and respect.

The staff here is so welcoming. The studio is clean with all of the bells & whistles: reformers, springboards, TRX, rings, chairs, etc. The instructors are educated, kind & motivating. It’s a great place to strengthen your soul! 100% recommend.
