I always have a pleasant experience when I visit Dr. James Chung at Lake Ridge Foot & Ankle Center. Dr. Chung is nice, friendly and very knowledgeable in his field of medicine. My foot looks and feels so much better after his plan of treatment. I appreciate that the office is neat, clean and quiet. I highly recommend Dr. Chung and his practice for anyone seeking podiatry needs.

During my daughters last visit on Sep 10, we asked the doctor (Dr. Derner) who is AMAZING, if my daughter (age 17) could come alone to her next appt, which was scheduled for last week. The med tech observed this conversation. Dr. Derner stated that since it was just a follow up with no medical procedures occurring, my daughter could come alone with a note from me.
On the day of her appointment, my daughter arrived and promptly called me in tears at work because of the feedback and behavior of the receptionist. She told me that she handed my note to the receptionist who then immediately handed it back to her and told her she needed to have someone over the age of 18 with her. My daughter said “that’s not what I was told in my last appointment,” and the receptionist told her she would not be seen without an adult present. She then returned to her keyboard and ignored my daughters presence. My daughter asked if she would call me to discuss what was happening and the receptionist told her “if you do t think you can understand what I am telling you, then I can call.”
I missed the call from the receptionist because I did not have the phone she was calling me from immediately accessible. I called back immediately and while on hold, my daughter called me in tears. I heard her talking to the receptionist.
The receptionist reiterated what she told my daughter. I informed her that the physician advised us otherwise in our last appt. She said regardless, my daughter could not be seen without someone over the age of 18. I asked to speak to the office manager and was told she was in Stafford. She gave me the number. I asked to speak to the physician and was told he was not available and might be after noon. I asked if he could call me during our scheduled appointment at 0915. I was informed that she would send him the message.
I called Stafford. The receptionist there informed me that the office manager was away at a conference. I informed her this was urgent and explained the situation. She told me that if the doctor advised differently that my daughter should be able to be seen. She returned a few minutes later and informed me that the receptionist from Woodbridge contacted the office manager and the office manager provided a verbal that regardless of what the doctor says, she would not approve it and that it is against Virginia law for my daughter to be seen without someone over the age of 18.
I have reviewed Virginia law and find no evidence of a law that states my daughter cannot be seen by a medical professional without someone over the age of 18 with her.
No one called me. It is now a month later. The office manager hasn’t called. The doctor hasn’t called. And my daughter was not seen. We won’t be back.
This type of business practice is unconscionable.
