Dentures, otherwise known as false teeth, are an item used to replace missing teeth that have been lost due to tooth decay, gum disease, genetic defects, or trauma. They help to restore the natural function and appearance of the missing teeth. Traditionally, dentures have been removable, but now patients have many options when it comes to denture design and permanency. What Are The Types Of Dentures Available For Patients In Milwaukee? Dentures are categorized as complete or partial depending on how many teeth the dentist needs to replace. Partial dentures are an option for patients who have lost only some of their teeth on an arch. They are made from a gum-colored base connected to a metal framework and are attached to the adjacent remaining teeth for support. These abutments or crowns are cemented to the teeth on each side of the space. COMPLETE DENTURES Complete dentures are used to replace a full row of missing teeth either in the upper or lower arch. Dentists further classify complete dentures as “conventional” or “immediate” depending on when the dentist provides them to the patient. Conventional dentures are placed in the patient’s mouth after the gums have healed following tooth extractions. The configuration and shape of the gums change after tooth extraction, and waiting for them to heal completely will provide the patient with better-fitting dentures. Many patients prefer immediate dentures so they do not have to be without teeth for prolonged healing times. The dentist will generally leave the front teeth and remove the remaining back teeth so those gum tissues can heal. Then impressions are made and the “immediate dentures” are fabricated and returned to the dentists. Once we have evaluated them the patient is appointed to have the remaining front teeth removed and the dentures inserted immediately. Sometimes we may require a soft tissue conditioner (like a band-aid) be used to help hold them in while the area is healing. After a period of months, the dentures will need to be re-lined so fresh acrylic can be injection molded into the denture to improve the fit. Since these dentures do have to be returned to the lab for relining we also offer patients the opportunity to buy “embarrassment” dentures so they won’t ever have to be without teeth!

We use caps made by microscopic dental labs and master ceramists. What Is A Zirconia Crown Made Of? Zirconia or (Zirconium Oxide) is a white metallic crystal used to create crowns, bridges, chimneys for implants and now even implants. Zirconia crowns have been done since 2001 when 3M introduced Lava crowns. While Zirconia has only been studied since 1995 for dental applications, long term studies are ongoing as to how Zirconia performs compared to other dental materials. Most crowns will last from 7-15 years depending upon the lab that made them and the care given to their maintenance. How Long Do Porcelain Crowns Last? Crowns can last anywhere from 7-20 years based on the quality of the lab, the skill of the dentist, the amount of height and width of the remaining tooth structure, and the cleaning and maintenance attentiveness of the patient. If someone does not floss or clean their beautiful crowns, they will fail. If a former dentist ground down the tooth too much and the remaining tooth structure is compromised, the longevity of the cap is compromised. Getting crowns requires maintenance, flossing, cleaning, and monitoring of the bite and chewing forces of all the teeth, so six-month check-ups are always recommended.

Dental bone loss refers to the loss of jawbone mass in the area around a tooth or in the tooth root. As we age, it is normal for our jawbone density to decrease. Dental bone loss can also be a consequence of osteoporosis, a common post-menopausal symptom in women. Dental bone loss is a condition that requires immediate attention and proper dental care as it can lead to more serious problems if left untreated. At the Hampton Dental Associates we advocate good oral health, not only focusing on the teeth, but also proper gum and jawbone health. What Are The Common Reasons For Dental Bone Loss? A healthy jawbone structure is essential to good oral health. If the jawbone condition is compromised, your teeth lose their support and can loosen or fall out, even without any other signs of damage or decay. Many factors can contribute to dental bone loss; understanding them will help you take preventive measures. TOOTH EXTRACTIONS The amount of jawbone mass is maintained by the presence of the teeth that are embedded in it. The constant force applied by the teeth on the jawbone when you chew and bite stimulates the bone, which helps maintain its integrity. When a tooth is removed and is not replaced by an artificial tooth, the jawbone will no longer receive the stimulation in that area. Bone resorption occurs and the bone is slowly broken down. PERIODONTAL (GUM) DISEASE Bacteria present in the plaque that forms on the surface of the teeth can cause gingivitis, where the gums swell, become red, and bleed. If the condition becomes more serious gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, where the plaque extends beyond the gum line and the gum tissue becomes irritated. As inflammation intensifies, separation between the gums and the teeth can create pockets that easily trap bacteria and become more infected. Chronic inflammation of the gum tissue will cause the bones supporting the teeth to break down. Over time the teeth in the affected areas will start to loosen and fall out. Periodontal disease is usually a result of poor oral hygiene and can be prevented with regular cleanings by your dentist, along with good oral hygiene practices at home. BRIDGES AND DENTURES Dental bridges and dentures are common treatments to replace some or all of a person’s missing teeth. Both are very effective in restoring the natural function of teeth while providing very natural-looking results. Often bridges and dentures are unanchored, however, leaving a gap between the appliance and the jawbone. The jawbone no longer receives the stimulation it needs to maintain its integrity resulting in bone loss. In dentures especially, the lack of bone stimulation causes the jawbone mass to decrease continually, requiring regular refitting of the unsupported dentures. Dental implants can be used with bridges and dentures to make these appliances more permanent. Those implants, because they are implanted into the jawbone, act like normal teeth, creating force against the jawbone when chewing and biting, maintaining bone mass. TRAUMA Tooth trauma can lead to bone loss. If a tooth is broken off, the biting surface is removed and the jawbone is no longer stimulated in the site of that tooth. In addition to teeth being knocked out or broken, we also come across cases where a patient’s jawbone has been fractured and has failed to heal, again causing trauma and bone loss. ISSUES WITH ALIGNMENT Even misaligned teeth can result in decreasing jawbone mass. Misaligned teeth create problems with chewing and biting and over time this will cause the bone to deteriorate. Proper orthodontic treatment, however, can restore a normal bite and recreate proper bone stimulation. TUMORS The removal of benign and malignant tumors in the area near the jaw often requires an entire portion of the jawbone to be grafted.

What Is Bone Grafting? Dental implants are becoming more and more popular among patients in Milwaukee, WI because they are realizing its benefits and its ability to provide a more permanent solution to missing teeth. However, dental implants are not for everybody. Dental implants require that the patient have a substantial amount of jaw bone to support the artificial tooth root that will be surgically implanted. But thanks to the developments in dental technology, dental implants are now a possible option for patients with not enough jaw bone mass through bone grafting techniques. Bone grafting are techniques that your dentist will use to increase the amount of bone that you have in your jaw region to make it possible to perform dental procedures such as dental implants. Bone grafting procedure can either be very minor or extensive depending on how much is needed to support the dental implant. Bone grafting may be required for patients who already have enough bone mass to accommodate the dental implant, but lack bone mass on the sides only. This technique will require a small bone graft to be performed and can be done during the dental implant procedure. If there is a need to make major changes in the shape of the jaw so that a dental implant can be placed, the bone grafting should be done several months before the dental implant procedure is scheduled. Bone grafts may be harvested from the patient’s own bone, a frozen and dried human bone that is available from a tissue bank, a bone substitute, or bone elements from animals. It is preferred that material to be used for bone grafting comes from the patient’s own bones. In minor bone grafting, bone shavings collected from drilling the jaw bone for dental implantation placement can be collected and used for the grafting techniques. When a larger bone graft is required, a special surgery will be performed to harvest the bone from other areas in the patient’s body. Mineral bone substitutes are also a good option as they are sterile and absorbed by the patient’s body over time to be replaced by their own healthy bone. What Are The Types Of Bone Grafting? Bone grafting procedures can already be performed during your dental implant surgery when your dentist determines that you would need additional bone mass in order to accommodate the dental implant. It is ideal that a simple bone grafting procedure be done whenever a patient will come in to have their tooth extracted to ensure that the bone mass is preserved or maintained even after the tooth has been lost in case the patient decides to have restorative procedures done later on. This bone grafting procedure will involve using sterile human bone granules that will be packed into the tooth socket after the tooth was extracted by your dentist. This will be covered by a collagen membrane that will protect the bone graft and the tooth socket will be closed with stitches. Over time the granules will be replaced with your own bone maintaining the level of bone in your jaw even with the absence of the tooth. If your tooth was extracted years ago and you are considering having dental implants put in now, an incision will be made where the missing tooth was and bone graft granules will be used to build up this area. To protect the granules, a protective membrane of collagen will be used and the area will be closed up with stitches. After a few months the bone graft will be integrated into the patient’s surrounding bone tissue and you can now proceed with having your dental implants installed to restore your missing tooth. A more extensive bone grafting procedure is required for patients with more advanced cases of bone loss such as those who have missing teeth and wearing dentures for a long time. Using the patient’s own bones or bone substitutes, the jaw bone will be built up and the bones will be secured to the patient’s jaw using specialized plates and screws. Bone granules will also be used to enhance the appearance and shape of the new jaw. The new bone will also be protected by a membrane of collagen, closed up, and will be left to heal for a few months before proceeding with any dental restoration procedures.

What Is A Root Canal? There are many misconceptions about root canals and patients in Milwaukee, WI have it wrong that root canals are procedures that can be excruciatingly painful which is why patients put off having them until the time that their dental condition has worsened. A root canal procedure is effective in repairing and saving a tooth from extraction when it becomes infected due to deep decay, repeated dental treatments, cracks or chips, large tooth fillings, or trauma. The treatment involves removing the infected nerve and tooth pulp and sealing off the tooth to prevent any further damage. The pulp of the tooth contains the nerves within the root canal. When Should You Get A Root Canal? It is difficult to identify right away that you have an infected tooth pulp unless you make a habit of going to the dentist for regular check-ups. Many mistake an infected tooth pulp for a tooth ache that will not go away and seek help from their dentist when the condition has already worsened. One telltale sign that you may need a root canal is experiencing a chronic tooth ache that becomes worse when you chew or apply pressure to the affected tooth. You may also feel a sudden sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. Upon inspection you may notice that the affected tooth has become discolored, swelling or tenderness of the gums near the infected tooth, and appearance of persistent pimples on the gums. If someone wants to eliminate the acrylic in their upper denture a minimum of 6 mini-implants must be placed and then we will make a metal reinforced horseshoe designed partially so you may taste your food and feel temperatures better. In the lower arch a minimum of 4 mini implants are needed to hold a lower denture but we will always try to place 6 to insure more retention, support and chewing stability. WHY SHOULD I GET MINI IMPLANTS? Mini implants can be great for a patient’s self image. Now the person can eat, speak, and smile as they did before their tooth loss. The procedure is minimally invasive when compared with typical full dental implant surgery. However, similar to its full-scale counterparts, mini implants are still able to anchor dental crowns, bridges, and dentures securely in place. What Are The Advantages Of Using Mini Implants? Mini implants can provide patients with the same benefits as conventional types of implants, but have the added advantage of being smaller. Thanks to that smaller size, mini implants can be used with patients who may not be good candidates for conventional implants.
