My wife was extremely excited to join this club, especially because it is located right down the road from our home. She spent a significant amount of time researching Pilates, the different membership options, and the various packages that Club Pilates had to offer. After doing her research, she decided to join, only to be met with an extremely uncomfortable and unprofessional interaction with the staff. During the conversation, the staff mentioned that they offered a discount if someone in the member’s family had served in the military. My wife explained that her husband (me) is a veteran and showed them a picture of my ID as proof. Despite that, they questioned whether I had actually served and told her they would have to get back to her about whether they would honor the identification. What made this especially frustrating was that my Virginia ID clearly identifies me as a Veteran at the top. The staff appeared to be completely unfamiliar with the different ways veterans can be identified on government-issued identification, yet instead of simply asking for clarification or taking a moment to verify the information, they chose to push back on my wife and make her feel as though she was being dishonest. Never in my life has anyone questioned my military service in this way, and it was particularly upsetting that my wife was put in the position of feeling like she had to prove that her husband was a veteran. To be clear, she never demanded a military discount, and I am not asking for one either. The issue is the way she was treated. A simple, respectful conversation could have handled the situation completely differently. Later that day, I drove to the club after work because I wanted to speak directly with the manager and address the situation. Unfortunately, the manager was not there. I left a detailed complaint with the front desk and asked that it be passed along. Now, almost a week later, no one from the club has reached out—not even to acknowledge what happened or offer an apology. That lack of follow-up is extremely disappointing. Mistakes happen, and employees may not always know every detail regarding veteran identification. But when someone is made to feel as though they are lying about their military service, the least you should expect from a professional business is accountability and a sincere apology. Based on this experience, I would strongly encourage others to think twice before joining this location. Hopefully, management takes the time to properly train its staff on how to treat customers with respect and professionalism, particularly when dealing with veterans and military families.
